Zinc is an important trace element for the proper functioning of the body. Zinc is involved in the synthesis of enzymes and hormones, supports both the female and male reproductive systems, is an essential component of hair and nails, and strengthens the immune system.
Beauty vitamins
True beauty comes from within. You can improve your appearance indefinitely with the help of cosmetic procedures and expensive cosmetics, but this effect will be temporary if the body does not have enough strength and energy to maintain health and natural beauty. Where do these forces come from? From a balanced diet with sufficient vitamins and microelements, good sleep, adequate physical activity. We asked Vera Viktorovna Serezhina, senior physician at the Doctor Q service of the LabQuest laboratory, about the levels of which microelements need to be monitored.
The role of vitamins and microelements in our lives
F Strong nails, smooth and glowing skin, shiny hair are only visible manifestations of a sufficient supply of vitamins and minerals to the body. Their role is much more important. Thanks to various microelements, the functioning of internal organs is normalized, nerve impulses are transmitted, hormones and biologically active substances are secreted. If a person’s diet is monotonous or lacks certain food groups, a deficiency of several vitamins and microelements develops at once. In this case, the symptoms can be very different, i.e. It is almost impossible to make an accurate diagnosis without research, and taking multivitamins for “prevention” is a useless idea, since there are special regimens for taking certain vitamins.
The most important “vitamins of beauty and health”
The seven most important vitamins and microelements, the lack of which can lead to serious consequences for the body and immediately affect the appearance: calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamin B12, folic acid, iron and zinc. They are found in varying proportions in almost all food products. But in order for the body to receive these substances in sufficient quantities, it is necessary to follow a nutritious and varied diet.
Calcium
Calcium metabolism in the body is regulated by the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Excess of this microelement is excreted by the kidneys. It is present in greatest quantities in bone tissue and is essential for healthy nails, teeth and hair.
The functions of calcium in the body are multifaceted: from maintaining the strength of bones, teeth, beauty of hair to the soft functioning of the intracellular structures of cells - the enzymes that it regulates, and has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. The calcium requirement per day in adults is 0.8–1 g per day. Calcium requirements increase in pregnant and breastfeeding women and athletes.⠀
Food sources of calcium include: dairy products, green vegetables (broccoli), nuts and sesame seeds, calcium-precipitated bean curd.
Magnesium
The beneficial effects of magnesium extend to all systems of the body: calms the nervous system and improves sleep quality, relaxes the smooth muscles of blood vessels, allowing blood to circulate freely throughout the body, relaxes the bronchi, has a beneficial effect on metabolism, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis, relieves women from symptoms PMS.
The first symptoms of a lack of this microelement will be sensations of “fly crawling” and tingling in the skin and increased excitability, with a tendency to convulsions.
Magnesium is one of the most important elements that is involved in the formation of nerve impulses in cardiac tissue and is responsible for the normal functioning of the nervous system. The first thing that suffers when there is a deficiency of magnesium in the body is mood. Irritability, neuromuscular tics, and convulsions appear. With a lack of this microelement, skin tone decreases, stretch marks form more easily, the condition of hair and nails worsens, appetite increases, which leads to a set of extra pounds.
Magnesium deficiency can occur due to low consumption of it in food or due to its non-absorption in the intestines in diseases of internal organs and painful conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, such as gluten intolerance. This microelement is found in the greatest quantities in vegetables, fruits and cereals. But due to the ubiquity of refined and fast food, magnesium consumption has decreased by almost 50% over the past few decades.
Sources of magnesium will be: wholemeal bread, cereals, legumes, green vegetables, dairy products.
The norm for magnesium content for adults is taken to be 4 mg/kg. This amounts to an average of 350 and 280 mg/day for men and women, respectively.
Phosphorus
Phosphorus plays an important role in mineral metabolism in bone tissue and ensures proper cell growth. Sufficient phosphorus content in the diet has a beneficial effect on the condition of the skin, nails and hair become stronger and look healthy.
Living matter has a huge need for phosphorus. DNA and RNA have phosphorus in their structure, energy molecules ATP, cell membranes consist largely of phospholipids (found in nervous tissue, involved in the delivery of fats, fatty acids and cholesterol). Phosphorus acts as an assistant to the work of various enzymes and, in combination with calcium, forms hydroxyapatite, the main inorganic compound of bone (50% of bone mass, 96% of tooth enamel). Phosphorus deficiency in healthy adults is possible when the phosphorus content in food is low. At the same time, the excretion of phosphorus by the kidneys decreases, but the excretion of calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which comes from the bone, increases. This causes weakness, anorexia and bone pain.
The causes of phosphorus deficiency are excess body weight, which increases the need for intracellular phosphorus, insufficient absorption of phosphorus in the small intestine due to its pathology, in diabetes mellitus a lot of phosphorus is lost due to heavy diuresis, long-term administration of phosphate-binding antacids (Renny, Gastal, Maalox, etc.). d).
Phosphorus is widely distributed in foods. Average daily phosphorus intake is approximately 1500 mg for men and 1000 mg for women.⠀
Food sources that contain a lot of protein (meat, milk, eggs and grains) are also high in phosphorus. The phosphorus content in food is approximately:⠀ 60% - from milk, meat, poultry, fish and eggs;⠀ 20% - from cereals and legumes;⠀ 10% - from fruits and juices;⠀ 3-4% - from such drinks like coffee and tea;
Vitamin B12
The passage of impulses through nervous tissue, as well as normal hematopoiesis, are impossible without vitamin B12. With its deficiency, a characteristic disease develops - B12 deficiency anemia, hyperpigmentation and premature aging of the skin begins. When vitamin B12 and vitamin C interact, active oxygen molecules are formed that have anticancer and fungicidal (antifungal) properties.
Chronic vitamin B12 deficiency leads to weakened immunity and chronic fatigue. The risk group for vitamin B12 deficiency includes: vegetarians and vegans, patients with diseases of the stomach and intestines, taking proton pump inhibitors (omeprazole, OMEZ), H2 blockers of histamine receptors (ranitidine, etc.), patients with diabetes mellitus and other diseases, long-term users of Metformin.
Most of the vitamin is present in red meat and some types of legumes.
Folic acid
Every pregnant woman takes this vitamin in the first trimester in order to reduce the likelihood of having a baby with pathologies of the nervous system. For everyone else, the vitamin is useful for normalizing the activity of the nervous system, strengthening nails and hair. Folic acid enters the body with food. It is found in beans, parsley, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, spinach, asparagus, liver, kidneys, meat, mushrooms, and yeast.
Iron
The first manifestation of iron deficiency in the body is anemia. According to statistics, 40% of women of reproductive age have varying degrees of anemia. The female body especially suffers from iron deficiency during pregnancy and lactation. Hair loss, nervousness, dry and flaky skin can all be a consequence of iron deficiency.
Iron in the body is involved in numerous redox reactions and is necessary for many enzymes and proteins, and is necessary for the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide in hemoglobin.⠀
Symptoms of iron deficiency may initially be so subtle that their duration is difficult to date. Patients may not be aware of the presence of the disease; deviations from the norm may be discovered accidentally during a blood test, for example.
If a deficiency of moderate or moderate severity appears, symptoms such as:
- fatigue, increased fatigue and pallor, - shortness of breath on exertion and palpitations, - geophagia (perverted taste preferences) is often observed: eating clay, starch, salt, cardboard and ice, and it is not always corrected with iron supplements, - glossitis (inflammation of the tongue , with atrophy of the papillae of the tongue and decreased sensitivity), - seizures in the corners of the mouth (angular stomatitis), - with chronic iron deficiency, nails can become brittle, dull, brittle and subsequently have the shape of a spoon, - swelling of the optic nerve and decreased vision ⠀ Dietary sources of iron: mammalian meat - beef, poultry or fish, and least of all - eggs, milk and cereals. Iron is poorly absorbed from wheatgrass, legume butter, spinach, lentils and beet greens, all foods high in phytate.
Zinc
Zinc is considered the main microelement of the reproductive system and is also involved in the regeneration of skin cells, hair, and nails. For men it is important for the maturation of sperm, and for women - for the formation of an egg.
A lack of zinc leads to poor tissue regeneration and growth, loss of hair color with the appearance of gray hair, focal hair loss, lowers mood, and causes drowsiness.
Zinc deficiency occurs with intestinal diseases, often of an inflammatory nature, in which the absorption of zinc is impaired, with alcohol abuse, with diabetes, in which the excretion of zinc is increased, resulting in a decrease in its amount in the blood.
A balanced diet aimed at replenishing this element from food products, as well as treating diseases that could lead to its deficiency, will help cope with a lack of zinc in the body. ⠀ High zinc content in the following products: meat, liver, eggs, seafood, whole grain bread, legumes, nuts.
Lack of vitamins and microelements develops much more often than hypervitaminosis. However, such a condition is possible if a person takes complex vitamin supplements to the diet for a long time and without indications. For example, excess iron in the body leads to a disease - hemosiderosis, one of the manifestations of which will be the appearance of “rusty-colored” pigment spots on the skin. The danger of hemosiderosis is that excess iron, in addition to the skin, is deposited in the internal organs, disrupting their functioning.
Before adding any vitamin supplement to your diet, it is important to check the current level of trace elements and vitamins in the blood and select a drug based on the body's needs.

Zinc-containing animal products
The element necessary for the body is found in many of the most common food products: grains, different types of nuts, fish and meat foods, wheat bran. Moreover, it is found in almost all yeast, as well as in poultry meat, inside onions and garlic, and in vegetables (only fresh).
Nuts and plants are, of course, rich in this element. But nutritionists believe that the most zinc-containing foods are meat and fish. Plant foods also contain zinc, but animal products are more abundant.
Among animal products, mention should be made of the egg yolk, which contains as much as four milligrams of this element per hundred grams of the substance, as well as dairy products. It can be milk, kefir, sour cream, and yogurt. Zinc is also found in sausages, but only in natural ones.
Zinc in meat products
From meat, this is, first of all, chicken heart, fried lamb liver and kidneys. Beef, pork, and lamb are classic examples of high-calorie foods that contain elements necessary for the body, including zinc.
Zinc in seafood
The most zinc-containing fish products are seafood products. And anchovies contain three and a half milligrams of zinc per hundred grams. Sardines, tuna, oysters are both tasty and healthy products containing useful microelements. Tuna in oil is a real delicacy, and salmon can be preserved and eaten for dessert for a long time.
Symptoms of zinc deficiency
You can notice a zinc deficiency by the fact that the skin and mucous membranes become dry and cracks appear on them. Hair loses its shine and falls out, nails peel and break. Later, problems begin with the digestive tract (disorders arise, for example).
Among the main symptoms of zinc deficiency are:
- insomnia and problems falling asleep;
- poor appetite;
- hair loss and brittle nails;
- irritability;
- drop in insulin levels;
- wounds heal poorly;
- poor skin condition;
If the zinc deficiency is small, this problem does not manifest itself in the early stages. If there is a slight lack of a microelement or if it is normal, and a person takes medications with zinc in large dosages for a long time, intoxication of the body is possible. Therefore, it is very important to know for sure whether there is a deficiency, and to take a course of vitamins only after consulting a doctor.

What types of creams with zinc oxide are there?
Baby creams with zinc oxide
It is worth noting that this can be either a diaper cream (such as Disetin) or a sunscreen.
For example, DermaQuest Mineral Cream SPF 30 with Zinc provides both complete protection and an anti-inflammatory effect, which is important for allergies and dermatitis in children. Another plus is a single application and the mother’s peace of mind throughout the day for the baby’s skin.
Soothing creams with zinc oxide
Pronounced anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties make zinc oxide a popular component of sedatives.
For example, Moisturizing Cream for Delicate Skin, DermaQuest based on valuable Argan, Jojoba, Rosehip oils, antioxidants and moisturizing complexes - instantly softens, moisturizes and restores the barriers of sensitive skin. Relieves irritation and redness. Contains zinc oxide equivalent to SPF 8 – 10.
Sunscreens with zinc oxide
The most popular application is in sunscreens with micronized zinc oxide . Performs the function of a mineral screen.
Creams for oily skin
In these formulas, zinc reduces the activity of 5 alpha reductase, an enzyme that causes increased sebum production and breakouts. Zinc oxide mineral particles also mattify the skin.
How to choose a zinc supplement
Vitamins with zinc must be chosen like any other drug: focus on certain criteria. These include possible allergic reactions, the age of the patient (the form of release depends on this), and how obvious the signs of zinc deficiency are, it is important to study contraindications and side effects. So, in more detail:
- Allergic reactions.
Medicines and vitamin complexes often contain dyes, preservatives and flavors. Intolerance can be to both the main active ingredient and auxiliary components. If you are prone to allergies, be sure to consult your doctor before taking zinc. - Drug interactions.
It happens that taking several specific medications is undesirable. Zinc, for example, is better not to combine with manganese, calcium, magnesium, tin, iron, copper and folic acid. Doctors recommend taking zinc only 2 hours after foods rich in these substances. Taking zinc reduces the absorption of certain antibiotics. - Age.
When choosing a form of release of a zinc preparation, it is necessary to take into account the age of the patient. For children, it is better to buy zinc in the form of water-soluble effervescent tablets. - Level of zinc deficiency.
If a person has a mild form of zinc deficiency (this does not affect his performance), you can simply adjust your diet and not buy a zinc supplement.
How to increase zinc levels?
The first step in this direction is obvious - eat more foods rich in zinc.
Again, grain products are an almost useless source of zinc, despite the fact that they contain quite a lot of it. Instead, you need to eat more meat, vegetables and seafood.
The best source of zinc in the world is considered to be the oyster, which contains huge doses of about 90 mg per 100 grams.
This is approximately 600% of the recommended daily intake, so you can eat oysters at least once a week. Oysters are also full of other beneficial nutrients such as magnesium and selenium.
Other good sources of zinc include unprocessed meats such as beef, pork and chicken. Some nuts contain high amounts of zinc, but their bioavailability is low.
If you can't find a dietary combination that you like, simply take a zinc supplement at 15 to 30 mg per day.
15 mg is the daily DV, but zinc can be safely taken up to 60 mg daily without obvious toxicity.
It is best to take a standard dose of 30 mg of zinc every day and combine it with a good diet. This will speed up the healing of inflammation on the face.
Additionally, zinc increases the effectiveness of vitamin A (great news for those who treat acne with retinoids).
Please note that zinc is certainly beneficial for the skin, but it is not a panacea for treating acne, so always consult a dermatologist, because zinc toxicity is no joke. The most common side effect of taking high doses of zinc is copper deficiency.
Top 10 best zinc preparations
If you are faced with the problem of zinc deficiency in the body, and eating foods rich in this microelement does not help, it is better to start taking vitamins. Talk to your doctor to understand what dosage you need and how long you will need to take the zinc supplement. We have compiled a list of the most effective complexes that are well absorbed and have many positive reviews from doctors and patients.

Features of assimilation
Zinc interacts with other substances in different ways. There are substances that are friendly to him, and there are substances that are hostile to him. Zinc goes well with vitamins B6, C, E and A. Magnesium and fluoride are “friends” with it.
Some substances present in the body in excess prevent it from being absorbed. These are copper, calcium, tin, iron, folic acid, lead. The most ardent enemies are alcohol, as well as coffee or tea. Drugs such as certain steroids or birth control pills also interfere with zinc. Fiber, which vegetarians eat, removes zinc by eighty percent.
But, if there is too much of this element, it itself prevents some substances from being absorbed. Among them are copper, iron and vitamin A. So, zinc has beneficial effects with a balanced diet.

How to use
Your doctor will recommend either topical zinc or oral supplements; both are available over-the-counter (OTC). Both forms differ in recipe and method of use. And different types of zinc are absorbed and processed by the body differently.
Before you begin zinc treatment for acne, your dermatologist or doctor will likely evaluate your diet to determine whether you have a deficiency.
Topical zinc
For people who get a lot of zinc from their diet, their doctor will likely advise using topical zinc. Topical preparations are available in the form of gels, ointments and creams.
Topical zinc can be used in combination with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). It can also be used in a treatment plan along with other acne medications such as benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, retinol, or resorcinol. Combine acne products only under the supervision of a dermatologist.
Some topical zinc products should be used more often than others. Check the label before use. Your dermatologist may also recommend that you start slower and less often than the label suggests, so don't be shy about asking them.
Always test new topical products on a small area of skin before applying them to a larger area. Stop use and talk to your dermatologist if you experience skin irritation or signs of an allergic reaction.
Oral zinc
Zinc supplements are available in tablets, pills, and chewable forms. Oral zinc is used as is, in a multivitamin, or in combination with other nutrients and minerals.
Take supplements only under the supervision of a physician. Typically, the maximum dose for adolescents is 34 mg per day; adults up to 40 mg.

The peculiarity of this form is the enclosure of the mineral inside the so-called “amino acid claw”. The absorption process itself occurs in the small intestine, where, thanks to chelation, this substance has maximum bioavailability and maintains an optimal level of the microelement in the body. Therefore, the chelated form is the most recommended in most cases.

Types of Zinc Supplements
There are a huge number of different zinc supplements available commercially for acne patients. Zinc comes in a variety of forms, and some are much more bioavailable than others.
It is very important to choose the right option because you may be wasting your money on a supplement that will not help you.
Zinc oxide is the most common type of zinc supplement. Used in most foods. It has very poor bioavailability, so don't waste your money on it.
Zinc gluconate is not the best zinc supplement, nor the most bioavailable, but it works to some extent. The study above used zinc gluconate, so it can be used to treat the skin.
Zinc sulfate - highly absorbed according to some studies. Not the best form of zinc, but not the worst.
Zinc glycinate is another good form and is absorbed better than zinc sulfate. Compared to zinc sulfate, glycinate is absorbed 16% more efficiently.
Zinc Orotate – Generally considered one of the best zinc supplements, but this has not yet been proven. This form competes with zinc picolinate.
Zinc Picolinate – Recognized as the king of all zinc supplements. Today, picolinate is the most bioavailable form. This study compared picolinate with zinc citrate and zinc gluconate and found that picolinate was best absorbed by the body.
Zinc citrate is quite well absorbed, but inferior to picolinate.
Zinc-1-methionine is another highly bioavailable form of zinc and is good for acne, so it is also considered effective.
If you see “zinc chelate” on the label, then know that it is not a specific type of zinc, but rather a specific class. Chelated zinc is a form that binds to an organic molecule to increase absorption in the body.
Zinc citrate, zinc picolinate, and zinc-1-methionine are all chelated supplements. The more precise form should be listed somewhere lower on the label.
