Recovery after labiaplasty – answers to the most frequently asked questions

How long does it take to recover after labiaplasty?

Some women feel comfortable the very next day after surgery, but most patients recover longer—up to five days. Sometimes the process takes one or two weeks. This situation usually occurs with complex plastic surgery options.

Although the initial recovery period is fairly quick, you will have to take care for a while after surgery. For now, it will be impossible to play sports, lift weights, take a steam bath and sauna, swim in the river, swim in the pool and be sexually active. All this will have to be postponed for a maximum of four weeks.

Preparing for surgery

No specific preparation for the intervention is required: it is enough to undergo an examination and collect everything necessary for the postoperative and rehabilitation period (pads, tight underwear, Miramistin, Levomekol, the usual painkiller).

Necessary examinations

Before the operation, a woman must undergo tests:

  • blood group, Rh factor, HIV, syphilis, hepatitis;
  • a smear to determine the degree of vaginal cleanliness.

If there is a history of allergic reactions to anesthetics, an allergy test is prescribed.

How to care for the healing area

During surgery, plastic surgeons use biodegradable suture material that does not need to be removed. The sutures dissolve on their own in about two weeks.

Bioabsorbable suture material

You need to take care of the operated area as carefully as possible. You should wash with warm water and soap. Of the hygiene procedures, only showers are allowed - baths are prohibited. If menstruation begins after surgery, you should refrain from using tampons and use only pads.

Labiaplasty surgeon

What kind of doctor does labiaplasty?
Surgical labiaplasty should only be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon! If we are talking about enlarging the labia with filler, this procedure is often performed by gynecologists and experienced cosmetologists. You can choose a labiaplasty doctor in Moscow based on reviews on forums, recommendations, or through consultations in clinics. In Moscow, the best labiaplasty surgeons are determined by patient reviews and examples of labiaplasty results. Such delicate plastic surgery should be performed in a clinic with a good reputation and only by an experienced doctor.

What physical activity is acceptable after labiaplasty?

After the operation, you do not need to lie down all the time. Some activity is even beneficial because it allows you to feel better and recover faster. Daily walks are beneficial, improving blood circulation and stimulating muscle function.

Daily walking after labiaplasty

When choosing sports activities after labiaplasty, you should remember that the load should be very moderate. When playing sports, options that put pressure on the intimate area are excluded.

Riding a bicycle, motorcycle, horse riding, or exercise on exercise bikes is not permitted. All physical activity must be discussed with your doctor.

Labiaplasty hematoma

A little later, after the swelling, a hematoma appears. A hematoma occurs when a small amount of blood leaks from a vessel and accumulates in the tissues of the labia minora. The causes of hematomas after labiaplasty are non-compliance with doctor’s recommendations, physical activity, fragility of blood vessels, and blood clotting disorders.

To prevent hematoma, I always carefully suture the wound, in addition to the cosmetic suture, I apply hemostatic external sutures, prescribe hemostatic drugs and drugs to prevent bleeding. Even in these cases, a hematoma may occur after labiaplasty, because the area of the labia minora cannot be tightly bandaged and, for physiological reasons, the natural processes of urination cannot be excluded.

If such a situation suddenly arises, you should immediately inform your doctor. The hematoma after labiaplasty needs to be emptied and the vessel sutured.

How long after labiaplasty can you resume intimate relationships?

While most activities can be resumed within the first week or so, intimacy is a different matter. She will have to wait up to four weeks.

Abstinence from intimate relationships after labiaplasty

Because every woman's body is unique, recovery is different for everyone, and the eight-week period may be extended or reduced. More accurate information can be obtained from a gynecologist who is monitoring the woman after surgery.

Contraindications for labiaplasty

Although this procedure is considered the most effective and widespread, it has a number of contraindications.

Such a surgical operation is contraindicated for patients with sexually transmitted diseases and pathological processes in the female genital organs, accompanied by inflammatory processes, poor blood clotting, oncological pathologies, and mental disorders.

Also, surgical intervention is prohibited for patients under 18 years of age and women who have not given birth.

How often should you visit a plastic surgeon after surgery?

A woman will need at least two visits to the doctor, but in some cases the specialist will need to be seen more often. More frequent visits are required after complex plastic surgery or if there are any complaints.

You should consult a doctor if any problems arise after labiaplasty. It is especially important to do this for a woman who has experienced pain, severe swelling, bleeding, or a fever after surgery. In this case, you need to contact the clinic as soon as possible.

It is imperative to come to the doctor for an appointment on time, even if you feel excellent and have no complaints. The doctor will evaluate how the healing is progressing and, if necessary, prescribe additional medications and procedures.

How does laser affect tissue?

Let's figure out how a CO2 laser affects tissue when it cauterizes tumors. The doctor directs the laser beam at the area of removal; when the beam hits the tissue, it is reflected and causes pendulum-like movements of the molecules, which leads to the evaporation of water from the cell and charring of the tissue. Part of the energy is transferred to surrounding cells, in which, under the influence of high temperatures, reversible protein denaturation occurs. It is the latter effect that causes the appearance of redness and swelling around the cauterization site.

But I would like to note that the surface after laser removal has a number of differences from other types of wounds, for example after a scalpel or electrocoagulation:

  • The incision is made without touching the surface of the skin, this 100% guarantees the risk of infection;
  • The laser coagulates the superficial layers of the dermis, while the deep ones remain undamaged, which is why it does not cause scarring and stenosis;
  • Another feature is that after laser exposure in tissues, the temperature rises, this leads to the death of bacteria and viruses, thus it has an antiseptic effect;
  • In the area affected by the laser, due to high temperatures, the vessels are sealed, so there is no bleeding, and a dense scab is formed that closes the wound, preventing bacteria from entering it;
  • After laser exposure, regenerative processes at the site of exposure are stimulated due to the penetration of a small amount of light quanta into the deep structures of the skin;
  • Compared to other types of cauterization, with laser cauterization the swelling around the wound is less pronounced and therefore there is no pain after laser removal.

Thanks to the above symptoms, the wound heals faster after laser, almost never suppurates or causes pain, and most importantly, does not lead to the formation of scars.

Postoperative period after labiaplasty using the “butterfly” method

Observation of patients who underwent such an intervention showed that the postoperative period was smooth. There was a temporary thickening along the longitudinal scar of the mucous membrane, which persisted for several days and soon disappeared. Only one patient experienced bleeding, which was soon eliminated. Doctors do not rule out that this is due to the patient’s too young age, who was only 16 years old. Therefore, such operations are not recommended at a young age.

The intervention area did not require special care - it was enough to treat the stitches with antiseptics and observe sexual abstinence for six weeks. Patients were also advised to avoid physical activity, avoid overheating, and limit sports activities until the tissues had completely healed.

All operated patients noted an improvement in the anatomy and symmetry of the labia minora, which began to have a more attractive appearance and beautiful shape.

Brazil is the birthplace of a new method of labiaplasty

Latin America is one of the regions where a variety of plastic surgeries are especially popular. Latin American women constantly try to make their bodies as attractive as possible. The intimate area, which is actively operated on, is no exception. It is not surprising that new methods are constantly being developed here to improve the appearance of the genitals, one of which is called “butterfly”. The technique has been successfully used in the Department of Plastic Surgery of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), Florianópolis, Brazil.

Ideally, the labia majora, equipped with a layer of fat, should completely cover the labia minora, covered only with sensitive mucosa. A large amount of excess tissue hanging down makes this area unattractive, makes hygiene difficult, and causes discomfort during intimacy. The mucous membrane of the labia minora, protruding from under the labia majora, often becomes inflamed, sore and dry. Sores and cracks may appear on it.

The clitoral hood, which covers the clitoris, should also be small and only cover the organ, and not look like an extra shapeless mass. Adhesions may form between the overgrown hood and the clitoris, interfering with intimacy and hygiene.

These problems with the genitals were experienced by patients who underwent labiaplasty surgery using the “butterfly” method. Interventions using this method were performed on 12 patients:

  • Ten patients with bilateral hypertrophy (increase in size) of the labia minora.
  • Two women with unilateral anomalous anatomy. Their labia were enlarged on only one side.

In five cases, it was necessary to additionally remove the hypertrophied hood above the clitoris. The age of the patients ranged from 16 to 39 years, with an average of 25 years.

Memo to the patient after laser intimate rejuvenation

Before the procedure for laser intimate rejuvenation and narrowing of the vagina, the patient, according to indications, must undergo a clinical examination, which includes:

  • Inspection
  • Flora smear
  • If necessary, cytological tests (in the presence of cervical erosion).
  • Ultrasound examination of the pelvic organs (ultrasound).
  • Tests for STIs (sexually transmitted infections, according to indications).

To carry out the procedure, tests are accepted no more than 10 days ago.

If, based on the results of a patient’s examination by a gynecologist, additional tests are required, the doctor informs the patient about them on the day of the visit, with a deadline for completion.

The patient can undergo the entire range of gynecological examinations in our clinic. Ready 1-2 days.

The procedure for laser narrowing and rejuvenation of the vagina is recommended to be carried out no later than the 20th day of the menstrual cycle, so that the mucous membrane is completely healed before the next menstruation.

This procedure has a number of contraindications, so it is performed only after consultation, examination and examination.

DIRECT CONTRAINDICATIONS:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding period
  • Oncology
  • Acute infectious diseases
  • Age up to 18 years, etc.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and is completely comfortable for the patient.

The duration of a laser rejuvenation session is 20-50 minutes, depending on the degree of vaginal atrophy and the power of the laser settings.

REHABILITATION PERIOD

Immediately after the procedure, the patient receives oral and written recommendations from the gynecologist.

1. If you experience nagging pain in the lower abdomen, reminiscent of menstrual pain, you can take a pain reliever.

Pain may occur immediately after the procedure and continue for several days after.

2. Vaginal discharge may appear after manipulation and continue for 10 days.

The discharge may vary in color and shape:

  • watery
  • ichorous with pieces of coagulated tissue is the norm.
  • There is no need to worry about this.

Menstruation that begins after the discharge ends may be heavier than usual.

It may start several days earlier than the usual schedule - this should be considered as the norm.

After the laser rejuvenation procedure, depending on the power of the selected settings, the patient must exclude sexual activity for 10-14 days.

Also, you should refrain from visiting baths, saunas, swimming in reservoirs, and insolation.

Performing laser labiaplasty

Today, laser correction of the labia is considered one of the most effective, fastest, reliable and relevant methods. The procedure is performed under general and local anesthesia.

The benefits of manipulation include:

  • ease of the postoperative period;
  • there are no scars left;
  • high sterility of the manipulation;
  • medications help quickly restore the skin and mucous membrane of the intimate area;
  • there is no discomfort or pain.

During the operation, the surgeon is guided by two main principles: the first is to preserve the sensitivity of the labia, the second is to preserve the protective function (it is impossible to completely remove the genitals, since the woman will be susceptible to infectious and viral diseases).

The duration of the manipulation varies from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. The time depends on the doctor’s experience, modern equipment and the complexity of the procedure. The surgeon corrects the shape and size of the genitals using a laser and special laser clamps. Many doctors, and even women themselves, believe that surgical intervention is already outdated and has lost its relevance.

In what cases is it prescribed

A woman should consult a specialist if she has suffered injuries that have resulted in the loss of the aesthetic appearance of the genitals, flaccid and sagging labia, increased levels of testosterone in the blood plasma, asymmetry, postpartum stretch marks of the outer labia, genetic plexus of the intimate organs, a feeling of discomfort in the genital area lips during normal walking and sports activities.

  • Recovery period

Having at least one of the signs, a woman is obliged to seek qualified medical help. Only an experienced doctor can prescribe surgery after examining the patient. The specialist must find out the physiological and psychological state of the woman and determine her readiness for laser labiaplasty.

Before surgery, tests are prescribed to determine whether the patient has any contraindications to the procedure. The list of laboratory tests includes blood and urine tests, a vaginal smear for microflora, blood for AIDS, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis.

If the test results do not reveal any contraindications, the doctor discusses with the woman the desired shape of the genitals and explains the technique of performing labiaplasty using a laser.
