Strange trend: laser correction of iris color

With the help of laser surgery, cosmetic surgeries are performed that can even change the color of the patient's eyes. In any case, many foreign and Russian publications write about this. The opinion of our doctors about this technique.

Modern laser surgery can work wonders—in the hands of highly qualified specialists, it can even restore vision. And now, with its help, cosmetic surgeries are performed that can even change the color of the patient’s eyes. In any case, many foreign and Russian publications write about this.

Indications for surgery

Surgery is indicated in the following cases:

  • coloboma - the presence of areas of lack of pigmentation on the cornea;
  • heterochromia - a different color for each eye, for example, blue and brown;
  • lack of pigmentation of the iris;
  • the patient's desire to transform his appearance.

The latter indications are most often presented. Pathology of the iris is relatively rare, so a small percentage of the population turns to an ophthalmologist.

The change in iris color may only occur in one eye. Often, a violation of shades is accompanied by unclear staining, when small traces of pigmentation disturbance are detected.

Types of surgery to change eye color

There are two methods for changing the color of the iris. Each of them has indications, contraindications, and a rehabilitation period. Therefore, before choosing a method, it is recommended to undergo a health diagnosis. If the patient has temporary contraindications, the procedure should be postponed until complete recovery.

Implant

The procedure allows you to change the color of the iris to any shade. This could be a change from blue to brown, or vice versa. Ophthalmologists often recommend this operation to people who completely lack pigmentation in the iris. The condition occurs in albinism.

Laser surgery

Using the procedure, the pigmentation of dark shades is reduced, the eyes turn out to be light. Therefore, the technique is indicated only for people with dark eyes. That is, the patient will not be able to change the color of his eyes from blue to brown.

This procedure is considered non-invasive, since there is no need to open the cornea to change the color of the iris. At the same time, the rehabilitation period passes much faster.

Blind spot of the eye: structure, functions, symptoms and treatment

Each person's eye has a special zone of the retina that is insensitive to light rays. This optical region is a blind spot, which is not involved in the process of human perception of visual images. The formation has a round shape, its size is no more than 2 mm.

The described anatomical structure of the eye was discovered in 1668 by Edme Mariotte, the famous French physicist. Hence the second name of the formation - “Mariotte spot”. The scientist sat people opposite each other. The subjects looked at a certain zone of space to the side of them - the participants began to feel as if their counterpart had no head.

Diagnostics

Diagnostics are carried out to clarify the characteristics of the pathological process, as well as to determine how much the blind spot has increased at the moment.

How is surgery performed using an implant?

The technique is carried out in several stages:

  1. after completing the preparatory period, the patient is laid on the couch, his hair is collected in a sterile cap so that it cannot get into the eye area;
  2. a local anesthetic is used for pain relief, the effect of which wears off within 2-3 hours;
  3. using surgical instruments, the cornea area is opened;
  4. a silicone implant is inserted, which has a hypoallergenic composition, so the cells of the immune system will not contribute to its rejection;
  5. the eye tissues are closed, after which the surgical intervention is completed.

The implant has a cutout in the center so that light rays can pass through it and penetrate the internal structure of the eyeball. After completing the technique, the patient remains in the medical facility; if there are no adverse reactions or complications, the person is discharged after a few hours. If negative effects are detected, the person remains in the hospital while they are eliminated.

How does laser surgery work?

The laser-based technique does not involve opening the eyeball. A person sits in front of the laser, and an anesthetic is dropped into his eyes. The laser acts on the cornea, destroying part of the pigmentation. The duration of the laser depends on the desired effect. The lighter the eye color, the more elements need to be removed.

Your eyes may be unusually dark for 1 week after surgery. But after the natural elimination of pigments, they will gradually begin to lighten, reaching the required level.

Blind spot test

To pass the test, you need to position yourself so that the cross and circle are at eye level, your face is parallel to the monitor, the distance to the monitor is approximately 20-25 cm, the center of the face (nose line) should be in the middle between the figures.

Left eye test

Close your right eye. With your left eye, fix your gaze on the circle. Begin to gradually move your face away from the monitor, without letting go of the black circle. At a certain distance from the monitor, the cross will disappear - this will be a blind spot.

Right eye testing

Close your left eye. With your right eye, fix your gaze on the cross. Begin to gradually move your face away from the monitor, without letting go of the cross. At a certain distance from the monitor, the black circle will disappear - this will be a blind spot.

Rehabilitation

To ensure that the procedure is painless for the patient and does not cause complications, rehabilitation rules should be followed:

  • prolonged sleep immediately after surgery so that the patent can regain strength;
  • wearing sunglasses when going outside in the first 7-10 days after the procedure;
  • It is forbidden to go to a bathhouse, sauna, take a hot bath, or sunbathe in the open sun, as this increases the risk of intraocular bleeding;
  • Do not touch your eyes; it is recommended to avoid mechanical damage;
  • you should reduce eye strain by reducing the time spent on the computer, phone, TV, tablet, and reading books;
  • do not resort to physical activity, it is prohibited to play sports for the time prescribed by the doctor;
  • undergo a second consultation with an ophthalmologist after completion of the operation at a strictly appointed time.

During repeated visits to the ophthalmologist, the quality of the operation performed and the condition of the eyeballs will be assessed. If the person’s well-being is satisfactory, the doctor will gradually lift the restrictions imposed during rehabilitation.

Complications

The technique is minimally invasive, so complications occur quite rarely:

  • bleeding on the cornea or inside the eyeball;
  • corneal burn due to improper use of the laser;
  • increased intraocular pressure;
  • decreased visual acuity, extremely rarely complete blindness;
  • disruption of the normal pigmentation of the iris, as a result of which it becomes unevenly colored.

In order to properly go through the rehabilitation period, you must follow the recommendations prescribed by your doctor. He must be highly qualified and work with modern equipment.

How can you change your eye color without surgery?

The most effective way to change the shade of the iris is contact lenses. They may have diopters if a person needs to correct vision function. The shade of the lenses can be absolutely any. But many of them look unnatural. When selecting lenses, it is important to choose high-quality models that will allow oxygen to pass through and retain moisture.

By choosing to wear contact lenses instead of undergoing surgery, the patient will not only save money, but also prevent complications.

Another equally effective way is to use cosmetics. With certain eye colors, the shade may change. This method will not completely change the color of the iris, but the eyes will look more expressive and brighter. You can also choose a certain tone of clothing that will highlight the shade of your eyeballs.

Surgery to correct the color of the iris is an ophthalmological procedure that carries certain risks. It is recommended to resort to it if the patient has diseases that affect the shade of the cornea. The procedure can only be performed by adults. If a pregnant or lactating woman wants to perform the operation, it is recommended to postpone it until breastfeeding is completed.

Possible side effects and contraindications

Naturally, such interference does not go unnoticed by critics. Experts believe that the release of melanin naturally clogs the channels, which can lead to increased pressure in the eye. There is a risk of developing glaucoma in the future. However, such claims must be supported by long-term follow-up of patients.

A high concentration of melanin pigment protects against sunlight and ultraviolet radiation, which can damage vision, so many believe that it is better to leave the concentration that a person receives from nature. On the other hand, using colored contact lenses is also not safe. Researchers of the quality of such devices have noted repeated consumer complaints. These include pain, redness of the eyes and even blurred vision.

After conducting a series of studies, it turned out that the beauty of blue-eyed people may well be just a stereotype. However, the main value of such medical breakthroughs is that today it is possible to perform operations that a decade ago people considered bordering on science fiction.

The contraindications are as follows:

  • the patient has diabetes;
  • problems with the cardiovascular system;
  • pressure inside the eyes.

Doctors also prohibit people who have relatives suffering from glaucoma and people under twenty-one years from doing this procedure.
