Otoplasty is a surgical procedure to correct defects in the ear. It is one of the most popular plastic surgeries. There are two varieties:

  1. Reconstructive;
  2. Aesthetic.

The first is carried out regardless of the child’s wishes, only with the consent of the parents and is vital. The second is performed exclusively with the approval of the baby and helps solve such a common problem as protruding ears in children.

Laser otoplasty

A more modern way to eliminate ear shape defects is laser otoplasty. The laser beam acts as an alternative to scalpel surgery. The laser is able to cut through tissue and act on cartilage, modifying its shape and thereby correcting the shape of the ears.

Traditional scalpel surgery is inferior to laser otoplasty for a number of factors:

  • The operation is carried out in a non-contact manner
    , because cuts are made with a laser beam;
  • the laser is able to glue the walls of blood vessels
    , reducing the risk of blood loss (coagulation ability);
  • cartilage tissue, heated by a laser beam, becomes plastic
    . The auricle can be easily given the desired shape;
  • after laser surgery there is much less swelling and bruising
    for the patient;
  • infection is excluded
    , since the laser beam completely disinfects the tissue during correction;
  • With the help of a laser, barely noticeable cuts
    , all manipulations are carried out with perfect precision;
  • the appearance of scars after surgery is excluded
    ;
  • tissue healing after laser correction occurs much faster
    , in contrast to traditional surgery. Laser radiation stimulates regenerative processes in tissues;
  • Laser surgery helps reduce pain from the intervention
    , as well as shorten the rehabilitation period.

Features of ear surgery for children

There is a significant difference between adult and pediatric plastic surgery. It is caused by the psychological characteristics of the child, his emotional imbalance, and the physiological state of the body with weak bone tissue. Ideally, the sooner the intervention is performed on a child, the better. This is due to the rapid formation of ear cartilage, so there is no risk of damage. On average, it becomes stronger by the age of 5.

At the same time, a child’s ear is more susceptible to change and can easily change shape, which cannot be said about the auricle of an adult. Therefore, the most important thing is not to miss the moment. There are several good reasons to perform otoplasty in children:

  • the baby will not be traumatized by the fact that he has protruding ears, because in kindergarten, in the yard, at school such children are usually teased, causing psychological discomfort and creating self-doubt in their own appearance;
  • In children, adolescents and young men, the ear cartilage is still pliable and prone to rapid correction, healing, restoration, it more easily takes the correct shape.

Rehabilitation period

The patient must constantly wear a compression bandage for a week after surgery. In the next 1–2 months, the bandage is worn only while sleeping.

Adult patients undergoing ear surgery in Moscow have the opportunity to begin work the very next day after surgery. Children can return to school in a week. Both should avoid physical activity for 3 weeks after discharge, and sports for 6 weeks. In addition, at first it is worth limiting:

  • water procedures;
  • sleeping on the stomach and side;
  • wearing glasses;
  • eating fatty, spicy and smoked foods;
  • visiting baths and saunas;
  • sunbathing.

Differences between aesthetic and reconstructive procedure

Aesthetic otoplasty is a purely cosmetic procedure. It is focused on obtaining the desired shape. Requires the child's consent to the operation. Solves the problem of external attractiveness. It usually happens once.

Reconstructive is a necessary measure. In some cases, it is vital because it allows you to restore hearing. Most often it is performed after injury to the auricle or in case of serious pathological defects. Does not require permission from the baby. Can be performed repeatedly, with gradual tissue build-up.

Both the first and second are done using local or general anesthesia. But, given the psycho-emotional imbalance of children, general anesthesia is most often suggested. During the correction of protruding ears, the emphasis is on light sedatives with intravenous administration. In adolescence and adolescence, local anesthesia is allowed.

Ear plastic surgery in Moscow: who will be interested in the service?

Otoplasty has different goals. With its help you can:

  • reshape your ears to give them a more natural appearance;
  • make one or both ears more proportional and consistent with the size and shape of the head and face;
  • “press” the protruding ears closer to the head;
  • reduce the size of the ears or make them more symmetrical.

Ultimately, otoplasty not only allows you to wear short hair without being embarrassed by your ears, but it also restores your confidence and positive outlook. Plastic surgery transforms the appearance of patients, allowing them to believe in themselves and increase their self-esteem.

Optimal age

The question "When?" parents are very worried. The fact is that, on the one hand, they strive not to be late and to protect the baby from psychological terror in a timely manner. But on the other hand, they are afraid not to disturb the tissues and harm the developing organism. This is normal and understandable, so we inform you that ear surgeries are best performed on children aged 5–6 to 14 years.

The first of the marked dates conveniently coincides with the preschool period. At this age, a large-eared child can be easily prepared to join the team. The second number is the deadline for guaranteed successful otoplasty for children in Moscow, when the cartilage has not yet completely hardened. But the most optimal period is considered to be 6 years.

Everything noted concerns aesthetic plastic surgery. Reconstructive interventions are allowed at any age, especially before the ear is fully formed. In this case, a 2-year threshold is considered acceptable. During this period, it is already possible to correct the earlobe. But with congenital anomalies and pathologies, the border can shift up to 1 year inclusive. For example, if it is necessary to straighten a rudimentary shell.

What is the cost of ear correction?

The operation itself is far from the only stage of ear plastic surgery in Moscow. In addition to this, the following are required:

  • medical examination that takes place during consultation;
  • conversation with a doctor, discussion of your wishes, physical characteristics and possible contraindications;
  • laboratory tests and other types of examinations;
  • preparation for surgery: refusal to take certain medications, physical activity, junk food;
  • rehabilitation.

Thus, the cost of ear correction consists of several amounts. You can find out the exact price of otoplasty only after attending an in-person consultation.

Psychological aspects of otoplasty for children

This issue is extremely important. Everything depends on the psycho-emotional state:

  • progress of the operation;
  • speed of healing;
  • duration of recovery;
  • presence/absence of complications.

Therefore, the baby must be convinced of the advisability of doing this now, so as not to suffer later. And parents should do this, taking into account the fact that between “not to conduct” and “to conduct” the child, of course, will choose the second. He needs to be pushed towards the need for plastic surgery, led in a reasoned and gentle manner.

It has been noticed that children who did not receive correction in early childhood insist on it as teenagers. However, at 15-16 years old it is more difficult to do this, so it is better to immediately choose the right time at 5-6 years old. But only parents can prove this to their child, support and convince him.

How does the procedure work?

As a rule, correction of protruding ears is performed either inpatient or outpatient. Younger children are given a general anesthetic. The technique depends on the specific case:

  • severity of congenital anomaly;
  • degree of injury;
  • difficulties with protruding ears;
  • presence/absence of aggravating circumstances.

Incisions are made in places where they will be completely inconspicuous. As a standard, the area behind the auricle is selected. Next comes modeling using prosthetics or natural tissues. This way the most optimal shape is achieved. To securely fix the cartilage, a surgical thread is used, which is subsequently removed. It is also possible to eliminate excess cartilage.

Another method involves excision of nearby skin and pulling the shell back. In this case, the cartilage is not truncated. The achieved position is also fixed with a thread. The sutures are then removed or dissolve on their own, depending on the material used. In more complex cases (anomalies in the development of the outer part of the ear, congenital pathologies, trauma, etc.), implants can be inserted.

The duration of the surgical intervention takes at most 2 hours . An hour later, the patient can return home, observing all the doctor’s requirements. Otherwise, complications may develop.

Ear otoplasty price

The exact cost of ear correction varies from person to person. It depends on the needs and physical characteristics of the patient. To find out the exact price of ear otoplasty in your case, you need to sign up for an in-person consultation, at which Professor I. A. Bely will be able to assess the real condition of your ears, listen to your wishes, propose an appropriate operation plan and explain all the nuances. In his practice, Professor I. A. Bely uses several proprietary techniques. During the consultation, he will select the one that is right for you. If you are planning to change the shape of your cheekbones, tell your doctor in advance. He will tell you whether it is possible to perform cheekbone plastic surgery at the same time as otoplasty.

After operation

Usually there are no negative consequences. But if they happen, it is only due to violation of medical regulations, injury to the operated ear and due to the peculiarities of physiological processes in the body. Thus, the following may appear:

  • scarring;
  • hematomas (bruises);
  • infection;
  • blood clots on the sink;
  • seam divergence;
  • injuries.

However, such facts are rare. Usually the treated area heals easily, since there is no accumulation of large blood vessels and fatty layers. Moreover, in children everything recovers much faster.

How to remove protruding ears without surgery?

It is recommended to begin this process immediately after the baby is born. You can fix the auricle in the correct position for up to six months using a special silicone mold. The child must wear the clip for six months. In infants, cartilage tissue lends itself well to adjustment, so the problem can be solved quite effectively. Correctors are selected only after consultation with a specialist in the absence of contraindications.

There are contraindications: the presence of damage to the skin at the places where the correctors are attached; individual intolerance to adhesive or silicone.

Another option for home correction is to constantly put on the child, including at night, an elastic bandage that will press the ears to the head.

Symptoms of protruding ears in a child

The fact that a child was born with protruding ears is visible to the naked eye. If the angle between the ears and the head is 30–45 degrees, they speak of the first degree of protruding ears ; if the angle is 45–90 degrees, then the second degree of defect ; the third, highest degree is indicated by the ears lagging behind the head by more than 90 degrees.
