This was her last message. The girl was taken to intensive care, where doctors have been trying to save her life for more than a week.

“I’m reporting to you from the scene so that you don’t worry,” Yulia Kurilko-Ryumina wrote to her husband before the procedure, “I will have such a thing to call a doctor around the clock.” For now they told me to change clothes and wait for the doctor.

She was preparing for a crucial moment in her life, plastic surgery. Her husband, Ilya Koshelev, recalls that the girl wanted to undergo surgery for several years. As a child, she suffered a nose injury and had long dreamed of getting rid of the consequences.

“She had a bent nasal septum,” says Ilya. “She wanted to breathe easier.” For her, changing her nose was not her first goal. But she decided to do two in one - to fix the septum and make the nose straight.

Afterwards she was able to get in touch and reported that the operation was successful. But only the husband suspected something was wrong in his beloved’s voice.

“She sent messages and videos that showed that it was not easy for her. She spoke sluggishly, it was clear that her condition was deteriorating.

A few hours later, the girl was urgently hospitalized with suspected acute appendicitis. Ilya urgently rushes to the clinic to find out what happened. But there, according to him, they just threw up their hands. He was given a small folder with Yulia’s documents and told: wait for the results of the examination.

“I have receipts in my hands, she had an ultrasound of her veins or something,” he says. “Here is her photo and how she was supposed to change.” Then everything became more sad, discharge from the fourth clinical hospital. Discharge diagnosis: Sepsis.

Second case in Medlange

From the same Medlange clinic, a few days earlier, Marina Kushkova was taken to intensive care.
The 29-year-old girl also dreamed of correcting the shape of her nose, recalls her husband Alexander. It took several months to choose a doctor, listen to reviews from friends, and collect information on the Internet. It seemed there was no safer institution in Moscow. “They immediately showed on the computer what it would look like,” he says. “Marina looked at it and was pleased with what was shown.”

The girl agreed to the operation without much hesitation. The risks, it seemed to her, were minimal. Her only fear was that the surgeon would not be able to correct her crooked nose.

— At 12:30 at night she writes to me that everything is fine, it doesn’t hurt as much as she thought, there is no severe swelling. But the night was restless. The next day, the assistant calls and says that Marina has gotten worse.

She was taken to intensive care, and a few hours later Marina died without regaining consciousness.

By that time it became known that there were already three victims of plastic surgery. And all the girls were taken to intensive care from the same Medlange clinic.

Nurse with mental illness

And while the documents are being seized, sources familiar with the situation draw the investigators’ attention to a very important detail. It turns out that in all six tragic cases, the doctors were assisted by one nurse, who, as it turned out, according to some sources, suffers from mental illness.

Ekaterina considers herself to have suffered not at the hands of doctors, but at the hands of a nurse. She decided to tell how the operation in Medlange went. The girl flew to Moscow from Kazakhstan, believing that a better clinic could not be found.

— On October 16, plastic surgery was performed on the breast. On October 17, I was given an injection of painkillers and my leg became completely numb. The nurse gave the injection. I had a dropper in one hand and injected it while lying down, slightly turned to my side.

At this moment, according to Catherine, her condition instantly worsened. The entire Medlange medical staff tried to revive the patient. And the girl tried to draw the doctors’ attention to the strange behavior of the nurse.

“They put a catheter in me, and it took her a very long time to put it on me,” recalls Ekaterina. “I was a little shocked when she said that she felt that something was preventing her from putting a catheter.

Now investigators are interested in the nurse's qualifications and mental state.

“Mental illnesses of varying degrees of severity that could lead to such an unreasonable and cruel attitude towards innocent people, from the withdrawal of medication to the administration of injections that led to these consequences,” says Marat Tambiev, head of the Meshchansky Interdistrict Investigation Department of the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia in Moscow.

Psychiatrists say that there are examples where a doctor intentionally harms a patient’s health. There are few such examples in the history of our country. But what if just such a specialist worked at the Medlange clinic?

Is the anesthesiologist to blame?

However, the victims themselves are more interested in the qualifications of anesthesiologist Lev Khitrin. According to one version, he could have been involved in the deaths of the girls. It was Khitrin who controlled the condition of the girls during operations and he also prescribed the amount of drugs.

A doctor from another, no less famous metropolitan clinic agreed to demonstrate what the work of an anesthesiologist is. A job that requires 100% attention. - This is a patient monitor, it is always turned towards the anesthesiologist and he always controls it. The device beeps when something happens. But now the sensors are not connected, so there is nothing,” the doctor shows.

What happened then, on the operating table? Anesthesiologist Lev Khitrin was in no hurry to tell anyone about this; he barricaded himself in his apartment and avoided meetings. How many lost souls does he have to his name?

He claims there were no problems before. So what happened in April 2022? So many deaths in one month. Lev refers to the subscription to non-disclosure of secrets, which he handed over to the investigative committee.

Former head physician of the Medlange plastic surgery clinic was sentenced to 6 years

The Meshchansky District Court of Moscow sentenced the former head physician of the Medlanzh plastic surgery clinic, anesthesiologist Lev Khitrin, to six years in a general regime colony. He was found guilty of committing crimes under paragraphs. “a”, “c” part 2 and part 3 art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in negligence in serious harm to health, as well as the death of a person). In addition, former clinic nurse Larisa Savelyeva was sentenced to two years in a general regime correctional colony. She was also found guilty of providing services that resulted in the death of a person. According to the investigation, several patients of the Medlange clinic died due to the fault of the convicts.

As specified on the website of the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation, Khitrin and Savelyeva are credited with six unsuccessful plastic surgeries performed in 2022, during which the patients suffered serious harm to their health. Three of them were fatal. According to Roszdravnadzor, the patients died due to infection.

According to the investigation, the clinic’s doctors did not have the right to perform plastic surgery operations. “Numerous gross violations were identified in the work of the clinic, and therefore its activities were suspended in May 2022,” says the Investigative Committee’s website.

In June 2022, the Meshchansky Court of Moscow sentenced another employee of the Medlange clinic, plastic surgeon Sergei Morozov, to a real prison term. He was found guilty under paragraph “c” of Part 2 of Art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. In 2022, during an operation he damaged the patient's lung. The doctor received 3.5 years of imprisonment in a general regime correctional colony; he failed to challenge the court’s decision.

According to the investigation, Lev Khitrin also participated in the operation, which was carried out at the Sfera clinic of plastic surgeon Gulnara Shah. Then the patient suffered serious harm to her health during rhinoplasty and fell into a coma. Doctors called an ambulance only a few days later - they tried to resuscitate the woman on their own. The patient regained consciousness 12 days after the incident.

The surgeon who performed the operation, Gevorg Stepanyan, is currently wanted, Izvestia reports. Gulnara Shah, whose clinic, as it turned out after the initiation of a criminal case, also operated without a license, was sentenced in March 2022 to 1 year and 10 months in a general regime colony. The court found her guilty under paragraphs. “a”, “c” part 2 art. 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (provision of services that do not meet the requirements for the safety of life or health of consumers, committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, resulting in negligence in causing serious harm to human health).

Poor quality drugs?

Also unresolved is the question of the quality of the drugs that doctors at the Medlange clinic used during and after operations. After all, all patients were hospitalized with almost the same symptoms of enlarged internal organs.

But who monitors the quality? Can patients and clinic staff be sure that only certified products are used during operations?

Human rights activists assure that one should not completely trust the version that counterfeit medications were delivered to the clinic by mistake. Allegedly, the authorities are closely monitoring this market.

“Roszdravnadzor gives a figure of approximately 1% of such drugs,” Alexander Seversky cites statistics, “Of course, they will check and install it. But, unfortunately, in our practice we encounter not the side effects of medications, but when people die due to blood poisoning in unsanitary conditions.

Patient in intensive care

With blood poisoning and an increase in the size of internal organs, he is now in the city clinical hospital named after. F.I. Inozemtseva and Natalya Orlova, also a patient of the Medlange clinic. A seemingly simple operation to support her face ended in intensive care.

“When I arrived for the first time, they said that the prognosis was favorable, but then she was conscious,” says Rada Orlova, Natalya Orlova’s daughter. “She spoke to me, but did not recognize me.” Probably because of the drugs. Now they are not saying anything, there are no forecasts. The condition is stable and serious.

Rada Orlova tries not to leave the hospital premises and even when at home, she constantly holds the phone in her hands, in the hope that they will call and say: “your mother is feeling much better.” At the same time, she is doing everything to ensure that those responsible for this terrible incident are punished.

— I submitted an application to the investigative committee. But this was literally yesterday or the day before, so I haven’t received any news from there yet.

Surprisingly, this is the same case when none of the victims have complaints specifically about the work of the surgeon.

Singer Karina Fombo also came to the attention of plastic surgeon Vadim Bakov several years ago. It was after his operations that several people ended up in intensive care. It’s true that the man was working in another clinic at the time.

“I had my breasts done, but in fact I went headlong, I needed a step before I decided to do it,” the singer recalls. “After the operation, the amazing doctor is filled with great gratitude to him.”

When the girl finds out what happened to other patients of surgeon Bakov, she is momentarily speechless. The singer is shocked, realizing that she could have been in the place of the dead.
