Bullhorn is an operation to correct the shape of the upper lip. It is performed when it is necessary to reduce too much distance between the nose and upper lip, while making it more voluminous.
Upper lip surgery (bulhorn) can quickly and painlessly make your lips beautiful and your face more proportional. Of course, you can use fillers (fillers) or try to hide imperfections with cosmetics. But this gives a temporary effect. Therefore, it is better to consider the possibility of having bullhorn surgery at the ART Clinic, a medical institution that has enjoyed a well-deserved reputation for many years.

What complications can there be after lip contouring?
Fortunately, complications are extremely rare, but still, do not forget that any surgical intervention carries risks. If the patient has some kind of infection in the body that was not detected during the preoperative examination or is undergoing an inflammatory process, then there may be complications after lip contouring . Sometimes they occur in completely healthy people, namely:
- Sensitivity in the area between the lip and nose decreases.
- Severe swelling
- Suture infection, both during and after surgery.
- Seams coming apart.
- The facial nerve is affected.
Such complications are extremely rare, and, as a rule, they almost never occur in experienced, long-practicing surgeons.

Advantages and disadvantages of the operation
The popularity of bullhorn is evidenced by patient reviews, which are mostly positive due to the huge number of advantages of the operation:
- You can do it even in old age.
- The effect of the operation lasts almost a lifetime.
- A short rehabilitation period.
- The result is a beautiful mouth shape.
- After injections, sometimes a “duck effect” is obtained, which is excluded after bullhorn.
- The procedure is absolutely safe.
- Conducted in comfortable conditions.
Are there any disadvantages to bullhorn? Reviews from patients are rarely bad, but experts highlight the following points:
- There are many contraindications to the operation.
- There may be complications.
- After all, this is a surgical intervention on the body, and in any case this is a risk.
- Long preoperative preparation, examination by a doctor, testing.
What does bullhorn give?
Upper lipplasty (bulhorn) can:
- add volume to a too thin upper lip;
- remove wrinkles from the upper lip;
- lift the upper lip to reduce the nasolabial triangle.
As we age, our lips begin to lose fullness and droop. Sometimes it can even give the face a gloomy, dissatisfied look. After all, people who don’t like their upper lip try to smile less often so that the defect is not obvious. Bulhorn (lip surgery) will correct aesthetic imperfections and help you express emotions more freely.
Preparation for the event
Before sending a patient for surgery, he is prepared, and this begins with a visit to the therapist. The doctor talks with the patient, writes out directions for tests in order to assess his condition and decide on the possibility of surgery. Usually they take a general blood test to check biochemistry and the absence of infections, as well as a general urine test. The patient must be sent for fluorography if he has undergone it for a long time, and he is also given an ECG.
If no contraindications are found at this stage, then the next stage is a consultation with an anesthesiologist. He is responsible for the correct selection of anesthesia that will be used during the operation.
More about the operation
How is bullhorn surgery performed?
Before plastic surgery of the upper lip of the bullhorn, you will need to undergo tests so that the surgeon knows: the patient is ready for surgery and there are no contraindications. Typically, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia, but general anesthesia can be done. The operation lasts from half an hour to one and a half hours. Depends on the volume of the planned operation.
Bulhorn surgery is performed using different methods, which differ in the location of the incision:
- external classic - the incision is made under both nostrils,
- external “Italian” - tiny incisions are made under each nostril.
- internal - an incision is made on the inside of the upper lip, on its mucous membrane. The seam after it is not visible.
After the incision, the surgeon stretches the tissue and removes excess tissue. In most cases, the doctor's task is to remove a wavy strip of skin at the base of the nose. Because of this, the upper lip rises, its inner part - the red border - becomes a little more visible. This makes the lip fuller.
How long do you need to stay in the clinic?
Upper lipplasty (bulhorn) is most often a minimally invasive surgical operation. It is done under local anesthesia. At the request of the patient, he can be given general anesthesia, for example, if other procedures are performed on the face in addition to bullhorn. In the first case, you can go home within a few hours, in the second - the next day.
For each patient, a stay at the ART Clinic means the maximum level of comfort and medical service, including careful monitoring of health conditions and necessary procedures.
How is the rehabilitation going?
Since bullhorn is a short and uncomplicated operation for the patient, recovery literally takes 7-10 days. The upper lip may be slightly swollen for a week and cause slight discomfort. At this time, the main thing is not to injure her, so as not to damage the seams. This includes avoiding eating solid foods that need to be chewed thoroughly.
You will need to avoid going to the bathhouse or swimming pool for at least three weeks, not swimming in a pond, and not exposing your lips to the sun. The most important rule is to follow the recommendations of the ART Clinic surgeon to avoid complications.

Bullhorn plastic surgery: how to achieve harmonious proportions
According to the canons of beauty, the distance between the border of the upper lip and the base of the nose should be about 1.2 - 1.5 cm. A significant increase in this distance is a relative indication for bullhorn cheiloplasty. If the distance is less than the stated numbers, “raising” the upper lip is impractical.
Why did we call the reading relative? Because numbers taken out of context mean nothing. Attractive, feminine and sexy facial features are the result of a harmonious combination of all its elements. The subjective aesthetic perception of the mouth, lips, nose and nasolabial area is greatly influenced not only by the distance between the nose and upper lip. What matters is the height and inclination of the tip of the nose, the distance from the base of the columella to the tip of the nose, the nasolabial angle and other features of appearance, in particular the position of the corners of the mouth, the width and volume of the lips.
Bullhorn surgery is not indicated for women with a high projection of the nasal tip. In this case, the result of the correction will most likely bring only disappointment. If the distance from the columella to the tip of the nose is greater than the distance between the columella and the upper lip, it is better to refuse the operation. According to the canons of beauty, the length of the columella should not be greater than this distance, therefore, raising the upper lip even more strongly with such a facial structure is irrational.
A gummy smile and an increase in the nasolabial angle of more than 120 degrees are other “contraindications” to surgery. Of course, in this case we are talking about aesthetic contraindications. As for medical prohibitions, these include: a tendency to form rough scars, herpes infection with frequent rashes, hemophilia, neoplastic process of any localization, decompensation of endocrine and somatic pathology, pregnancy, lactation.

Rehabilitation after the procedure
In order for rehabilitation to go unnoticed and without complications, the patient himself must take responsibility for caring for the postoperative suture. You should try not to subject this area to stretching or injury, and keep it clean to avoid infection. Before the sutures are removed, which occurs after 1.5–2 weeks, they must be treated with antiseptics.
The swelling should go away in a few days; if this does not happen, the doctor will prescribe decongestants. If the seam is torn, it is stitched up again and they wait until it heals; this lengthens the rehabilitation period. If there are no complications, then the scar will be completely formed in 1.5-2 months and there will be no restrictions. You can use both regular skincare and decorative cosmetics.
What effect to expect
The main task of the specialist is to harmonize the central oval of the face and emphasize the sensuality of the mouth.
- The upper lip will be slightly upturned and everted
- Your smile will become more open
- The face will acquire youthful features
Bullhorn lip augmentation can be classified as anti-aging. A slight lifting of the upper lip is indicated for many ladies after 45-50 years. It is ideal to carry out the intervention before correction of the perioral zone using fillers. The mouth area ages quite intensively due to active facial expressions. Moisturizing and filling small wrinkles around the lips with a preparation based on hyaluronic acid will enhance the aesthetic effect of the operation.
What to expect from bullhorn?
In order not to leave the doctor with a feeling of disappointed expectations, let's figure out what you should really expect from the procedure:
- facial features will become more proportional;
- the upper lip will appear slightly upturned and everted;
- a more open smile will appear;
- a rejuvenation effect will be created.
The area around the mouth ages most noticeably due to facial wrinkles, so bullhorn is considered an anti-aging procedure. It is sometimes combined with filler injections around the mouth and blepharoplasty.
Possible complications after bullhorn:
- infection (due to unsterile instruments);
- nerve damage;
- numbness of the lip;
- hematoma formation (subsides within 3–4 days).
And, of course, the most unpleasant complication is the bullhorn scar, which is quite difficult to hide even with the help of cosmetics.
Recovery after the procedure
Despite the fact that the operation is low-traumatic, the incision requires care and respect . Recovery takes place within a week, stitches are removed on days 5–6. Within 2 weeks, the area above the lip will be swollen; perhaps the upper lip will disproportionately increase in volume - this is also a consequence of swelling.
During the postoperative period, several rules must be followed:
- give up spicy food;
- avoid open sun;
- do not rub the seam, do not use scrubs and peels on the face;
- If possible, try not to smile;
- Do not visit the bathhouse or sauna for a month, and do not wash your face with too hot water.
In case of successful healing, a thin cosmetic seam remains, which is hidden by the anatomical features of the face. The final lightening of the scar will take 2 months.
The healing process can be speeded up by using anti-scar gels, but make sure the wound is completely healed.
Bullhorn result
After correction, lips look proportional and attractive. The operation returns harmonious features and youth to the lower third of the face. The upper lip becomes voluminous and symmetrical, its shape becomes more sensual. Wrinkles in the nasolabial triangle area are smoothed out, the smile becomes open and expressive.
The effect of cheiloplasty lasts forever; it is almost impossible to correct the result. Therefore, choose a time-tested clinic and plastic surgeons, in whose professionalism you can be confident.
Comparison with other lip correction techniques
Sometimes women resort to the simplest method of lip correction: massages and special exercises. The effectiveness of such manipulations is not very high, but there are other methods:
- injections with gels, Botox,
- lipolifting;
- using implants;
- electroporation;
- thread lifting.
Injections are a fairly safe and painless procedure. They contain tonic substances and hyaluronic acid.
The advantage is the low cost of their implementation. The course will cost 15-17 thousand rubles, but it must be repeated every year, since the effect of the procedure does not last long. The contraindications are the same as for bullhorn surgery, however, the rehabilitation period is much shorter, because there are no stitches that need to heal. The injections themselves are done while using painkillers. .
Effective for lip correction and botulinum toxin injections, which make the skin elastic, smooth out wrinkles, but the shape of the lips and location on the face do not change.
After the procedures, the face looks younger, but they also need to be repeated once a year.
Lipofilling is the injection of fat into the contours of the patient’s lips, taken from other parts of the body. This procedure is good for allergy sufferers, since the body will not reject its own fat. The cost of the procedure is slightly lower than bullhorn, they promise a long-lasting result, but in reality, over time, the fat is absorbed and the procedure has to be repeated.
During electroporation, hyaluronic acid is injected using a special device. These procedures are safe and non-traumatic, but there must be at least 9 of them per course. Electroporation must be repeated every year for the effect to be noticeable.
To correct the shape of the lips, thread lifting is also used, when tissue tightening is carried out by implanting special threads under the skin of the lips. The effect of such an operation lasts for about three years.
Implants made from natural and artificial materials are also used to change the shape of the lips. In terms of duration, effect, and rehabilitation period, this operation is similar to bullhorn, but the preparatory period is somewhat longer. It is not recommended to smoke for several weeks before surgery, as there is a high risk of an allergic reaction.
