Xeomin or Botox? How to choose the best from the best?

Wrinkles? No reason to be sad! Express your emotions freely, laugh heartily! Don't worry about crow's feet and wrinkles on your face showing your age. Botulinum therapy will help with this. An injection technique that “blocks” excessive muscle contraction and, accordingly, “treats” facial wrinkles.

Interestingly, botulinum therapy is popular not only among women, but also among men. According to the World Association of Cosmetologists, compared to 2000, the number of men resorting to Botox injections has increased by 33.7%.

How does the procedure work and what is the secret of the technique?

First, the doctor will examine you - assess the tone and strength of facial expressions, the condition of the skin and the severity of facial wrinkles, taking into account your age. Then you need to make manipulations with facial expressions, for example, frown or smile. The doctor will determine the places where the drug should be injected and the exact dosage.

The specialist will treat the skin with an antiseptic. Using a thin sterile needle, the drug is injected into the necessary facial muscles. In our Clinic we use Botox, Dysport, Xeomin.

The essence of the technique is that at the injection site the drug blocks neuromuscular impulse transmission. The muscles relax and the skin smoothes out. When a new signal enters the muscle, it does not respond. Doesn't shrink, doesn't wrinkle. The result is smooth, even skin regardless of facial expressions.

At the end, the doctor will again treat the skin with an antiseptic. The effect will appear in 2-3 days and will be maximum in 10-14 days. The result lasts 3-6 months.

Duration of 1 session: 15-40 minutes. Recommended course: according to indications. Frequency: according to indications. The effect is noticeable after: 1 procedure. Side effects: none.

Xeomin or Botox? How to choose the best from the best?

Even those who have never resorted to the services of cosmetologists have a rough idea of what botulinum therapy is. For many, injections of youth have become as commonplace as cutting and styling hair.

It is also known that not only the well-known Botox is used for anti-aging injections, but also new drugs with a similar effect, such as Xeomin. A logical question arises: Xeomin or Botox – how to choose? How are these tools similar and do they have any fundamental differences?

Xeomin and Botox: composition, scope of application

In both the first and second cases, the main component of the drug is the waste product of the microorganism Clostridium botulinum. However, Xeomin uses a pure neurotoxin produced in vitro by the Clostridium botulinum type A strain, while Botox is formulated with a purified neurotoxin complex, botulinum toxin type A.

The principle of action of both drugs is identical. But since Xeomin contains a pure neurotoxin, the protein and antigenic load on the body when used is practically reduced to zero.

For those who have decided to use botulinum therapy for the first time, you need to know that both Xeomin and Botox have all the necessary certification and permission for use in the field of aesthetic medicine. How to choose one or another drug primarily depends on the specific problem that needs to be solved at the moment.

So, Botox copes better with the following tasks:

  • Wrinkles in the corners of the mouth and around the lips.
  • Wrinkles on the neck and chin area.
  • Ptosis.
  • Facial asymmetry.
  • Hyperhidrosis.

The use of Xeomin is recommended in cases where it is necessary to eliminate:

  • Horizontal frontal folds.
  • Wrinkles on the bridge of the nose between the eyebrows.
  • Crow's feet" on the outer corners of the eyes.
  • Fine wrinkles on the face and neck.
  • Nasolabial folds.
  • Radial wrinkles around the mouth.

Of course, these are not all the differences between Xeomin and Botox. Continuing further comparison, several important conclusions can be drawn.

Xeomin and Botox: differences

Botox contains complexing proteins that stabilize the pharmacokinetic effect of botulinum toxin in living tissues. But these same proteins are capable of triggering the body’s immune response to a foreign element.

That is, when using Botox, there is a risk of an allergic reaction and the development of infectious and inflammatory processes on the skin. Xeomin contains no protein compounds. Consequently, the likelihood of unpleasant side effects is eliminated by almost 100%.

Since there is no protein component in Xeomin, the patient's immune system will not produce antibodies to the new pharmaceutical drug. In this regard, the reaction of “addiction” or insensitivity to Xeomin is excluded. In the case of Botox, such risks, although insignificant, still exist.

The sizes of the molecules of Xeomin and Botox are different - Botox has larger ones, Xeomin has smaller ones. Consequently, the degree of diffusion (penetration) of them into tissues is also different. But due to the fact that the ability of Xeomin molecules to be attracted to muscle receptors is much higher, they migrate much less to neighboring tissues.

In practice, this means that a side effect of using Botox can be sagging tissue or impaired facial expressions. There is virtually no such risk when using Xeomin.

You can also choose Xeomin or Botox based on dosage. Since the diffusion of Xeomin molecules is much weaker, this means that the volume of the drug will need to be administered much less to achieve the desired effect.

Botox must be stored and transported under certain temperature conditions. If they are violated, the effectiveness of the drug decreases significantly, and the effect of the procedure either becomes minimal or completely absent. With Xeomin there is no such problem, since its storage conditions are not so strict and the active substance remains unchanged at temperatures up to + 25ºC.

As you can see, Xeomin has many more advantages compared to Botox. The only disadvantages include the fact that this drug cannot be used in the treatment of hyperhidrosis, as well as the fact that the effect of using Xeomin is less durable. The achieved result lasts for 3-4 months, while the effect of Botox lasts at least six months.

In any case, the decision to use a particular drug is made by a cosmetologist. This is an important point, because when choosing Xeomin or Botox, a specialist is guided by such data as the amount of work, the essence of the problem being solved, the desired effect of the procedure, the patient’s age, the presence of any contraindications, etc.

We all dream of preserving our beauty and youth for as long as possible, and many global cosmetic brands help us make this dream come true, offering their developments, innovations and procedures.

The progress of anti-aging cosmetology has given us “injections of youth”, but the choice of a drug has become a real problem for many. What to choose - Dysport or Xeomin , a true professional in the cosmetology industry, our chief physician Irina Aleksandrovna Romanova, will tell you today.

“Patients often ask which botulinum toxin to choose to correct expression lines. We at the clinic have many years of experience working with Dysport and Xeomin. Both of these drugs are excellent and meet the highest requirements of cosmetologists and patients.

Dysport is a French drug produced by the Ipsen since 1990; it was registered in Russia in 1999.

Xeomin has been produced by Merz (Germany) since 2001. It was registered in Russia in 2008.

The botulinum protein molecule itself is the same in both preparations, but they differ in stabilizing substances that do not affect the effect of the procedure. So which drug should you choose? If you are still very young and want a natural, soft correction, then I recommend starting your acquaintance with Xeomin - in most cases it gives a softer correction, with its help it will be easier for the cosmetologist to smooth out wrinkles that have begun to wrinkle, while preserving your individuality.

We are often asked why a unit of Xeomin costs more than a unit of Dysport ? The fact is that the activity of the unit of Dysport and Xeomin is different and they differ by about 2.5 times. That is, if to correct a certain zone you need to put 50 units of Dysport, then for the same zone of Xeomin you will need about 20 units.

If you have always done Dysport injections, but decided to try Xeomin - please! In addition, in December you have a great opportunity to do this at a discount. You may like the effect of Xeomin more, or perhaps you will not feel the difference or next time you will decide to return to Dysport again - either option is possible, since both drugs are wonderful!

It is very difficult to say which one is objectively better. It's the same as choosing which is better - an iPhone or a Samsung? Everyone has their own fans, and some people love both, sometimes they just change.”

We will be glad to see you at the aesthetic medicine clinic “Irina”!

About the action of botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin is a substance that has been actively used in cosmetology for almost 30 years. For its production, stabilized and purified botulinum toxin type A is used, synthesized in the laboratory by Clostridium Botulinum bacteria. The essence of its action is to block the nerve impulse on the way from the nerve ending to the muscle fibers.

Normally, when an impulse is transmitted to the junction of the muscle and the nerve ending, acetylcholine is released. This is the substance that actually causes muscle contractions. Proteins contained in acetylcholine penetrate the membrane of the nerve ending. The job of botulinum toxin is to cut off access to the membrane for some of these proteins. As a result, acetylcholine cannot connect to the membrane of the nerve fibers and remains inside them. The nerve sends a signal, but the muscle does not contract and the skin straightens without any tightening effect.

Initially, botulinum toxin was used as a medicine to treat certain eye pathologies, muscle hyperactivity, various pain syndromes, hyperactivity of the endocrine glands, etc. Its neuroparalytic effect was once noticed. Over time, it began to be used for aesthetic purposes, as it is an excellent way to “hide” wrinkles or reduce sweating due to hyperhidrosis.

The substance is injected intramuscularly with a special microneedle, or less often subcutaneously. Thanks to very small needles, injection marks are almost invisible, and the procedure is almost painless. The technique is effective for relieving excess muscle tension and eliminating muscle asymmetry in any part of the body. When working with the face, cosmetologists most often use botulinum toxin to eliminate wrinkles of almost any depth in the forehead, chin, nasolabial folds, corners of the eyes, etc.

Important. Experts recommend using preparations containing botulinum toxin type A using the “whole face” technique. It involves the introduction of a substance throughout the face, taking into account the characteristics of its structure. Injecting botulinum toxin into certain areas can highlight them too much against the background of the entire face, creating a mask effect.

About drugs

Botox

This is a time-tested and many experts option that has already become a classic. The drug contains a complexing protein, so when using Botox there is a possibility of allergic reactions. The drug is presented in the form of a fine-crystalline white powder, produced in sterile glass bottles. Immediately before the procedure, the powder is mixed with sodium chloride (0.9%) until a homogeneous transparent solution is obtained.

Botox is actively used for:

  1. correction of folds that form in the décolleté and neck area;
  2. reducing the appearance of wrinkles in the forehead and bridge of the nose;
  3. reducing the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes (so-called “crow’s feet”);
  4. eliminating small wrinkles in the nose area;
  5. reducing facial asymmetry and ptosis (drooping of the eyelid).

Botox has strict storage conditions: the optimal temperature for this drug is about -5 0C. Opened packaging cannot be stored for longer than 4 hours at a temperature of 4 to 8 0C.

Xeomin

This is a highly purified botulinum toxin type A made in Germany. The drug does not contain a complexing protein. The degree of purification of the substance made it possible to reduce allergenicity and increase safety for the body. The drug is presented in the form of a fine-crystalline white powder of 50 and 100 units, produced in sterile glass bottles.

Xeomin is actively used for:

  1. correction of folds that form in the décolleté and neck area;
  2. reducing the appearance of wrinkles in the forehead and bridge of the nose;
  3. correction of nasolabial folds;
  4. correction of wrinkles in the lower part of the face;
  5. reducing the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes (so-called “crow’s feet”) and lips;
  6. eliminating small wrinkles in the nose area.

Important. A distinctive feature of Xeomin is the reduced size of botulinum toxin molecules, which makes it possible to administer the drug into even the smallest muscles.

Possible complications and post-procedure care

All drugs containing botulinum toxin can cause side effects. Among them:

  1. dizziness;
  2. headache;
  3. nausea;
  4. slight increase in temperature (not higher than +37.5 0C);
  5. burning, itching, swelling or redness in the injection area;
  6. feeling of excessive skin tension;
  7. loss of sensation;
  8. lacrimation, double vision.

To minimize the likelihood of a negative reaction of the body to the drug, experts recommend adhering to a number of simple rules:

  1. do not take a horizontal position for 5-6 hours;
  2. do not visit baths, solariums, or the gym for 2 weeks;
  3. do not have sex for 24 hours;
  4. do not take alcohol or drugs, as well as antibiotics and drugs that affect blood clotting;
  5. limit facial expressions for 24 hours.

Botox or Dysport, which is better?

Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are drugs of the same group - botulinum toxins type A. They all act locally and lead to the same result: they seem to “turn off” the work of the facial muscles. After all, it is active facial expressions that cause the formation of small skin folds and the appearance of early facial wrinkles. The difference between the drugs lies in their manufacturer:

  • Botox - Allergan (USA)
  • Dysport - produced by Ipsen (UK)
  • Xeomin - produced by Merz Aesthetics (Germany)

How many units of Dysport do you need?

How long does the effect last after the procedure to eliminate wrinkles in the forehead, eyebrows and eyes?

The result is visible from 4 to 6 months after the first procedure. If you decide to prolong your youth again, the effect after the second procedure will be longer. The drug has a special effect on some patients; their muscles refuse to tone after 4-6 months, so the effect can last up to 1 year.

Why are injections of these drugs needed?

If you want to get rid of facial wrinkles in the corners of the eyes (“crow’s feet”), forehead and between the eyebrows without long, painful rehabilitation, our doctors know a recipe for effective rejuvenation that will not keep you waiting - these are injections.

The drugs contain botulinum toxin, a substance that has a locally paralyzing effect. Penetrating into the affected area, it is this component that relaxes individual facial muscles, resulting in smoothing out the folds of your skin.
