Shapovalenko : in my opinion, the main reason for its popularity is that hyaluronic acid is the best skin moisturizer of natural origin, which is part of the intercellular substance and is responsible for the elasticity, smoothness and hydration of the skin. With age, as well as due to external factors (dry indoor air, temperature changes, poor diet, stress, etc.), the amount of natural hyaluronic acid decreases and, alas, this is reflected in the skin: it becomes drier, premature wrinkles appear, there is a feeling of tightness. Hence the need arises to compensate for the loss of one’s own hyaluronic acid with the help of cosmetics.

How realistic is it to achieve such an effect with the help of a cream applied externally - to compensate for the deficiency of hyaluronic acid in the skin? Can a cream guarantee such an effect?

T. Shapovalenko : good question. My colleagues and I were interested and came to the conclusion that the effectiveness of the cream directly depends on two factors. Firstly, the cream must contain low molecular weight hyaluronic acid; any other type of it works only on the surface of the skin, and therefore does not compensate for the deficiency of its own hyaluronic acid. Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid has a microscopic molecular size, which is why it penetrates deep into the skin. The second factor is the active substance. The higher its concentration, the more effective the cream will be. From a scientific point of view, the transport of substances through the membrane occurs by diffusion from an area of ​​high concentration to an area of ​​lower concentration, that is, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid naturally penetrates the skin along a concentration gradient.

Yes, interesting, really very scientific. How can a girl who wants to buy an effective cream determine what hyaluronic acid is in it and in what quantity?

T. Shapovalenko : the simplest thing is to carefully study the composition before purchasing. If the label says “low molecular weight hyaluronic acid”, then this is already a decent cream, and if you also find information - “increased concentration or content of hyaluronic acid”, then you are holding in your hands a product that should definitely meet your expectations. Also pay attention to the place of sale. For example, pharmaceutical cosmetics are more reliable and trustworthy.

And the question is: before applying decorative cosmetics, it is recommended to first use a moisturizer; is hyaluronic cream suitable for these purposes?

T. Shapovalenko : yes, but not every hyaluronic cream will be a good base for makeup. Indeed, before applying makeup, it is always better to first moisturize the skin, and the moisturization should be deep enough to protect the skin from drying out by cosmetics throughout the day. For this purpose, a cream with low molecular weight hyaluronic acid is best suited, which provides deep, prolonged hydration. Also, another important point, I think many girls will understand me, is that it happens that you apply a cream, but it gradually rolls off - these are creams containing film-forming substances, so they leave a film on the face and are not at all suitable as a base for makeup.
