Review of gel fillers for contouring and lip augmentation

Lip augmentation using contouring is the most popular beauty procedure. Clinics and medical centers vied with each other to offer “Mona Lisa smile”, “French lips” »

and "sexy lips".

Indeed, the procedure takes literally 40 minutes, makes the face sensual, rejuvenates and beautifies. Injecting filler into the lips allows you to restore the youthful fullness and clear contour of the lips that have been lost with age, make thin lips more expressive, and remove wrinkles around the lips.

At first glance, the scheme is very simple: a small amount of a substance is injected into the lips, which, when it gets under the skin, begins to hold water molecules around itself, as a result of which the lips puff up, become juicy and seductive. Beauty! You inject the drug and expect a wonderful result.

But only on one condition. The procedure must be performed by a professional of the highest class. Contour plastic surgery of the face and lips only seems to be a simple matter. Practice shows that otherwise the result will please only your worst enemies.

For many years now, at the medical level, we have been engaged not only in beautiful lip contouring. People turn to us every day to correct other people's mistakes. Today we share this “black list” in the hope that it will save you from disappointment and tears due to a thoughtless choice of doctor and drug.

How important is the choice of lip filler?

Not all drugs are approved for use in Russia. And, of course, offers of drugs without a Registration Certificate from Roszdravnadzor are distinguished by a favorable price: as a rule, it is up to 8,000 rubles. Can these fillers be used? After all, in some countries they are allowed?

If you are lucky and:

  1. the drug will turn out to be the original, correctly stored during transportation from abroad;
  2. the cosmetologist will be a professional and will not violate the technique of administering the drug and the conditions for receiving patients;
  3. you are young and have a good metabolism

then there should be no consequences of introducing the “left” drug.

But if at least one of these conditions is violated, then you may become one of the patients who experience the consequences of introducing unofficial drugs.

Drugs that are not approved and that we do not recommend for use

Dermalax, Rejeunesse, Regenovue, Elravie: after these drugs, our cosmetologists had to eliminate the unwanted consequences of the lip augmentation procedure.

3rd place. Electroporation

This is a physiotherapeutic procedure and a relatively new technique. First, the client undergoes a light lip peel using ultrasound therapy. Then, under the influence of a special device, hyaluronic acid and vitamins are introduced. Electric pulse waves open micropores and thereby allow the cells to be saturated with valuable substances. After the device has finished operating, these channels are immediately closed.

The manipulations are painless and safe: there is no need to make injections, incisions, or undergo anesthesia; the risk of infections is minimized. The result is noticeable immediately, and the effect lasts from 3 months to a year. All this time, the skin remains elastic and beautiful. But to get voluminous and juicy lips, be patient: it will take 4-12 sessions.

Electroporation is most often required for girls after 25 years of age. Starting at this age, collagen production decreases, and lips can no longer boast of firmness and elasticity.

Cost: from 6 to 10 thousand rubles.

Permitted fillers

A number of manufacturers produce special and separate preparations for lip correction. How to choose the optimal drug?

Let’s make a reservation right away: the choice of a specific gel remains with the cosmetologist. But patients are wondering – what is the fundamental difference between fillers?

A professional cosmetologist must choose his own drug for each type of patient.

What determines the choice of drug?

Fillers based on hyaluronic acid are used to correct the lips and perioral area. More precisely, there are also cosmetologists who introduce various “synthetic” gels, but, as a rule, they do not belong to professional aesthetic medicine and work from home.

The characteristics of the drug used are determined during a face-to-face appointment, when the doctor assesses the initial condition of the patient’s skin and soft tissues, and also outlines upcoming tasks.

Tasks are divided into three categories:

  • Simple increase (size and volume)
  • Contouring and work in the perioral area
  • Correction of shape defects (asymmetry, post-traumatic changes, etc.)

Every cosmetologist has “favorites” that he is used to and loves to work with. From the patient's point of view, you just need to make sure that these drugs are official and licensed , correspond to the expiration date and are sterile (fillers are produced in a disposable syringe of a certain volume, usually from 0.5 to 1 ml, which is opened in the presence of the patient).

Let's say, if you need to achieve several goals, and separate preparations in the amount of 0.5 or 1 ml are indicated for each, the cosmetologist will make a “mix”, and then, if the amount of gel turns out to be excessive, he will work on another area of the face (wrinkles or folds). But he definitely won’t leave them in reserve and won’t use them on another person!

Side effects and risks

The side effects of hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary and should only last a few days. These may include:

  • bleeding from injection sites;
  • swelling and bruising;
  • redness and soreness at the injection site;
  • reactivation of cold sores or blisters (herpes simplex) on or around the lips.

More serious side effects or risks may include:

  • severe and prolonged swelling or bruising lasting one week to 10 days;
  • lip asymmetry (parts of the lips of different sizes);
  • lumps and unevenness on the lips;
  • infection;
  • injection into a blood vessel causing tissue loss
  • ulceration, scarring, or hardening of the lip;
  • an allergic reaction that causes redness, swelling, or itching around the lips.

If you develop a fever or severe swelling, you should call your doctor immediately.

Popular fillers in aesthetic cosmetology

Despite the regular appearance of competitors, the most popular fillers are still those from the giant concerns Allergan, Teoxane and Merz. They have ideal cohesiveness and elasticity, undergo multi-level cleaning and control, and are packaged in convenient dosages.

The main and proven drugs for lip correction are:

  • Juvederm UltraSmile, Volbella
  • Teosyal Redensity, Kiss
  • Belotero Balance, Intense
  • Etermis 4

Juvederm filler is so popular all over the world that the corporation has created a huge variety of its derivatives. Allergan has developed UltraSmile and Volbella for the lips and perioral area only - and these are not the only gels in the series that can be used in the mouth. Teoxane also produces Teosyal Redensity, Kiss and other fillers suitable for lip contouring. And Merz released Belotero Balance and Intense fillers for a full-scale “game” with contour and volume.

For example, with Belotero Intense you can outline the contour, which is what any patient, both young and mature, expects from the procedure. It is the contour of the red border that women paint on with pencils and lipsticks, and sometimes they fill it with pigment for permanent makeup. The same filler is optimal for global treatment of the lips and periorbital area in older women. It is suitable for smokers, athletes, and patients with accelerated metabolism.

Belotero Balance and Intense preparations can be perfectly combined within one procedure, filling the contour with one, and the red border itself at a deeper level with the other. Princess Filler is also used for superficial rejuvenation or correction of adjacent areas.

The collections of cosmetologists contain innovative developments - fillers, in which each molecule of hyaluronic acid is enveloped in the antioxidant mannitol, protecting it from breakdown under the influence of native hyaluronidase, a degrading enzyme present in the body. This significantly prolongs the effect of the gel and keeps it in its original volume for a long time.

Unfortunately, unscrupulous cosmetologists often pursue only one goal: to sell more of the drug. They are not interested in such “little things” as harmony and proportionality of the face.

Remember: a conscientious and competent doctor will never inject you with more than 1-1.5 ml of filler during one procedure.

If your lips are thin and this is your first lip augmentation procedure, then introducing more than 0.5 ml is not advisable!

Hit parade of horror stories for adult girls

So, here are the most common problems that result from unsuccessfully performed labiaplasty.

Lips turn out to be larger than you wanted

Did you dream of Angelina Jolie's plump lips, but got Pamela Anderson's lips? Unfortunately, you were injected with an excessive amount of gel.

.

Amanda Lepore, freak. “Pumped” lips look approximately the same on all types of faces - too unnatural to take their owner seriously.

If this is a modern drug based on hyaluronic acid, then you shouldn’t be too upset. Within a year, hyaluronic acid will dissolve on its own, and the lips will return to their natural shape. However, if the image of a “Malibu lifeguard” is not to your taste, come. Using special Spanish enzymes, we will delicately eliminate excess drug, maintaining the volume in the right places.

The harmonious proportions of the face are disturbed

A very common mistake. To see this, watch the opening of any film festival or other event where the elite gather. Most older actresses undergo lip contouring – this is a fact.

For one actress, “pumped” lips are perceived separately from the face as something completely foreign. And for some, the correction is completely invisible - for example, Dame Moore. She always had string lips. And now they do not stand out on the face with their fullness. But look how perfectly they harmonize with the rest of their facial features.

Dame Moore is one of the few who does not “pump” her naturally thin lips. Despite the use of contouring, her lips look natural and youthful. Perhaps this is the best example of the good taste of a cosmetologist and his patient.

If, unlike Damie, you made a mistake, it makes sense to correct it and return your lips to a proportional appearance.

If the harmony of features is disturbed, the face is not perceived as beautiful

. In order to avoid the effect of someone else's lips, a contour plastic specialist needs to know in detail the structure of the face and its proportions, the laws of harmony, and also take into account several dozen features of the structure of the lips themselves, their age, balance in the upper and lower lips, their symmetry with the left and right sides

For example, at Platinental we use 13 criteria to create an irresistible smile. All of them are carefully taken into account each time before the procedure - individually for each patient.

Adequacy test: do you still think extreme lip size is beautiful?

Violation of correct lip volumes

Lips seem beautiful to us not when they are simply equally large, but when they meet certain criteria. It is very important that the lower lip in profile is fuller than the upper lip.

If this is not so, then there is no need to talk about beauty. And here it doesn’t matter: they are the same or the upper lip is fuller than the lower. The ideal ratio of the size of the upper and lower lip is 1/3 to 2/3

. This is the golden ratio, which was described in his works by Leonardo Da Vinci and which every self-respecting contouring specialist strives for in his works.

Destruction of the delicate anatomy of the lips

When a child draws a beautiful princess, he most often carefully draws her lips with a heart: the top one is in the shape of a bow, the bottom one is plump. A child will never draw two identical sausages instead of lips for a princess. And he's absolutely right.

The upper lip in humans has a complex structure. It must have a vertical groove (filtrum). At the junction with the red border, the philtrum forms a labial tubercle. The two smoothly curved ridges of skin along the edges of the groove are called columns of the philtrum.

The border between the skin and the red border of the lips is usually curved like a bow. The romantically inclined ancient Greeks, famous connoisseurs of beauty, compared the shape of a beauty’s lips with Cupid’s bow, and this name has survived to this day. There is also a Cupid's arch - the central part of the upper lip.

In order for lips to be beautiful, all this delicate anatomy must be carefully preserved. If, during contouring, an excess of the drug is injected, then the natural contours of the lips disappear - and we see just two plump pancakes, which can delight only a hungry person

.

Beautiful lips are:

    • A clearly defined Cupid's bow.
    • Clear columns of the filtrum.
    • Clearly defined red border of the lips, emphasizing the curves.
    • Smooth skin between the nose and upper lip.
    • The distance from the base of the nose to the upper lip is less than 2 cm.
    • The Mona Lisa fold (a smile hidden in the corners of the lips) even at rest.
    • The lower lip is 1.5 times fuller than the upper lip.
    • The most protruding point in the profile of the upper lip projects forward relative to a similar point on the lower lip.
    • The angle between the upper and lower lips at rest is clearly visible.
    • Ricketts' line (Riccets E-line) is a straight line that runs from the tip of the nose to the protruding point of the chin, at a distance of 4 mm from the upper lip and 2 mm from the lower lip.
    • At rest, the upper lip slightly opens the tips of the teeth.

As you can see, beauty has many parameters and subtle nuances. And if you evaluate the beauty of lips by only one of them - size - this clearly betrays provincialism. Wearing “dumplings” on your face is as bad manners as appearing in public with extended and painted nails.

Lip eversion

If excess filler was injected from the lip mucosa, there is a risk of lip eversion. In this case, the inner mucous surface of the lips becomes visible, which should only come into contact with the teeth.

Jackie Stallone is the famous mother of her son, Sylvester Stallone. Eversion of the lips as a result of the injection of an excessive amount of artificial gel.

Try doing this procedure in front of a mirror - turn your lip out a little. Do you see? The shade of the mucous membrane is light, it differs from the bright color of the lips. Therefore, any inversion is very noticeable. In this case, it is hardly possible to talk about the beauty of lips. But the beauty here is not even the worst thing.

The everted mucosa is not intended for contact with air. As it dries, it becomes covered with cracks that become inflamed. If nothing is done, stomatitis (inflammation of the entire oral cavity) and cheilitis (inflammation and severe peeling of the lips) develop.

Asymmetry

If an unequal amount of the drug is injected into the lips, asymmetry occurs: for example, the right side of the upper lip becomes larger than the left. This is one of the common mistakes when unprofessional plastic surgery is performed.

Pamela's bewitching charm and open smile make this defect not obvious. However, there is a clear asymmetry of Pam's lips, which appeared after their enlargement.

"Duck Mouth"

The famous “duck mouth” is also the result of a medical error. It appears when at a young age an excessive amount of the drug is injected into the skin of the upper lip.

As a result, the gel partially migrates, the upper lip swells, becomes longer, and truly begins to resemble a duck's beak.

Drooping corners of the lips

"One wrong move and you're a father." The same phrase very accurately conveys the features of contour plastic surgery. Two wrong movements with a syringe in the corners of your lips - and you literally become 10 years older in 30 seconds

.

Have you ever wondered why celebrities constantly smile? Perhaps only Victoria Beckham allows herself to walk along the Red carpet without smiling.

In addition to demonstrating friendliness, a smile helps very well to hide the corners of the lips and low cheekbones that have drooped with age.

This is not an exaggeration. One of the clearest signs of a “woman over 40” is drooping corners of the mouth. This facial expression has nothing to do with a bad mood. Drooping lips are as obvious a sign of age as nasolabial folds and bags under the eyes.

But unlike a bad contouring specialist, a good specialist will make every effort to lift the corners of your lips. Like this:

A good doctor will definitely make your face more attractive by turning the corners of your lips upward.

Wavy lip edge

With superficial and uneven introduction of the gel at the border of the red border and mucous membrane, it leads to the appearance of a wavy edge of the lips.

Inflammation

Inflammation on the lips can occur if sterility rules are not followed during and after the procedure.

However, the doctor is not always to blame for this problem. Very often, patients ignore care recommendations and do not follow the regimen prescribed by the doctor. Lips after contouring are easily negatively affected by sun rays, too hot air in baths and saunas, and failure to comply with hygiene rules.

Lip deformity

If earlier we talked exclusively about the unprofessionalism of the doctor, now is the time to remind you that “not all yoghurts are equally healthy,” and filler is different from filler.

There are a number of problems associated with administering the wrong drug. Permanent fillers (PAGE and silicone-based gels) do not dissolve. It would seem that one can only dream about this. What's better than beautiful lips for life? But in reality, everything turns out to be far from the case.

Once under the skin, permanent fillers over time:

  • migrate, which leads to lip deformation,
  • cause inflammation and swelling,
  • lead to the formation of scars,
  • come into conflict both with each other and with the tissues of the body, which is fraught with very dire consequences.

We wholeheartedly advise you not to experiment with your own health with dubious cosmetologists. Low prices for drugs should not please you, but alert you: no one will work at a loss, so what are we saving on? Most often, unfortunately, it is on the qualifications of doctors and medications. And then the question, how much does lip contouring cost, turns into the question: how can I live with what was done to me, and how much does it cost to fix everything?

We correct the consequences of unsuccessful contouring every day:

— every day we remove biopolymer from the lips,

— we excise granulomas and oleomas,

- modeling the shape of the lips,

— we perform lip plastic surgery,

— we excise scar tissue,

— we use special Spanish enzymes to eliminate excess filler,

- etc.

Correcting errors is more expensive than preventing them. But the flow of those wishing to do so, alas, is only increasing.

We wrote this article to talk about what we see day after day in consultations and in the operating room. To save you from mistakes. We cannot betray the tears and pain of girls and women who cannot eat, sleep or even close their mouths normally. Take my word for it. They come to Platinental as their last hope for unique technologies. And although we take on the most difficult cases, only 90% of them can be corrected.

Filler composition

Almost all lip fillers consist of hyaluronic acid.

The following components can be added to them:

  • Crosslinking agent (specific ester that stabilizes hyaluronic acid)
  • Phosphate buffer (an ingredient that reduces post-procedure swelling and regulates pH levels in tissues)
  • Anesthetic (lidocaine, ensuring comfortable administration and distribution throughout the tissues)

Gels based on calcium hydroxyapatite and other “hard” components are not intended for working with lips.

And of course, our clinic does not use biopolymer gels or other similar products, which inevitably provoke aesthetic and physiological complications.

6th place. Injections using gels

This is perhaps the most common technique, which is classified as contouring. A little manipulation - and you are the owner of plump lips. But it's not that simple.

There are two types of gels: biopolymer and biodegradable. The first (permanent) ones are not excreted from the body. After a few years, particles of the material begin to “walk” across the lips, distorting their shape. The only way to get rid of the gel is through surgery, but this is not always possible. Lumpy dumpling lips are the result of this particular procedure. In many countries (but not in Russia) such a gel is already prohibited.

The second type of gels is temporary. They contain hyaluronic acid, which moisturizes lips from the inside. The skin becomes elastic and wrinkles are smoothed out. They increase the volume and correct the shape of the lips using a biodegradable gel. The result lasts from 6 months to a year.

Cost: from 10 to 20 thousand rubles.

“I was offered to get my lips done cheaply!”, or the main pitfalls of “cosmetologists”

Did you know that the nasolabial triangle is called the “triangle of death”? This area of the face is distinguished by a specific blood supply and a densely intertwined vascular-capillary network. That is why doctors categorically do not recommend even squeezing out acne in this area - an infection introduced into the wound can penetrate the systemic bloodstream and quickly spread to the brain.

Entrusting work with the nasolabial triangle to charlatans and impostors, especially if there is an invasive effect (as in the case of lip contouring), is equivalent to playing Russian roulette!

The second point: cheapness is an attractive marketing ploy only at first glance. If you delve into the cost of high-quality drugs, it becomes clear that the price for lip augmentation cannot be 3000-5000 rubles. At a minimum, this will not justify the purchasing expenses of the master or clinic. What will the cosmetologist receive for his work? You don’t think that anyone in the field of aesthetic medicine is engaged in charity in this way?

Preparations from proven brands that have been on the market for a long time:

  • Regularly subject to laboratory tests and examinations
  • They undergo a series of cleansing measures
  • Manufactured to the highest European, American and international quality standards
  • Hypoallergenic
  • They have proven themselves brilliantly in practice - none of the known fillers have resulted in severe complications after being administered to patients of different nationalities, races and ages

The purchase price of such gels is high, because huge laboratory and research facilities with staffs of thousands of people are working on their creation. And good cosmetologists pay a lot of money for them, not because they are a big name. But because after injecting the drug, they can work calmly and sleep at night, without fear for the health of their patient.

And if a doctor has forgotten the oldest postulate and principle of medical ethics from the time of Hippocrates, which sounds like “do no harm,” the question arises - what is this person doing in medicine?

By choosing cheapness, you voluntarily admit:

  • Gel rejection and migration
  • Fibrosis and tissue necrosis
  • Inflammation and suppuration
  • Infection (including due to possible unsterility of instruments)
  • Compression of blood vessels and nerve endings with characteristic consequences

Side effects are long and difficult to eliminate through surgical interventions, antibiotic treatment and other unpleasant measures.

Recommendations after lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid

Injections with hyaluron are a very popular and popular procedure. Despite this, questions about what happens to lips immediately after lip augmentation, how to take care of them, what needs to be done, and what is strictly prohibited, are not getting smaller. The specialists of our clinic have extensive experience in carrying out such manipulations, so they are well aware of all the rules and list of prohibitions and will tell you about them at the first consultation.

You will not be able to evaluate the final result immediately, but even it will depend not only on the qualifications of the cosmetologist, the injection technique and the composition of the filler. Carefully study all our tips, then you will have an idea in advance how to maintain the effect of lip augmentation after the procedure

First impression

Perhaps this is exactly what worries many. In the first hours after injections, redness and slight swelling will form around the lips. Don't be afraid, this is a natural process. Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid, subject to all the rules of the procedure, is a safe method. Hyaluron is present in our body by itself, it is an intercellular fluid that saturates our skin with moisture. Injections are an artificial saturation of the subcutaneous space with this substance. And since injections still involve careful puncture of the skin, on the first day after lip augmentation there may be traces of injections. Gradually, severe swelling and inflammation disappear, leaving your lips with wonderful volume and richness that can last up to 6-10 months.

How to care for lips after augmentation

In addition to the unnatural swelling and redness we have already mentioned, you will feel that the skin around your mouth has become very sensitive. As they say, beauty requires sacrifice. The area around the mouth itself is usually very tender, and even with the use of anesthetics during the procedure, you may experience some soreness in the first days after the injections. You will be concerned about how long it takes for your lips to heal after augmentation. Don't worry, the process goes quickly. The skin from the injected gel should be saturated with hyaluronate and take on a new voluminous shape. Unpleasant sensations may continue for a couple of days. But within a week, pleasant changes will occur. Try not to rub or actively touch your lips immediately after augmentation; under no circumstances scratch the injection sites, this can severely damage the skin, blood vessels and disrupt the process of natural adaptation.

If you are still very sensitive to pain and discomfort, you are allowed to use special pain-relieving gels or creams. These medications will help reduce soreness in and around the injection area and will also help with healing. For example, experts recommend applying Bepanten after lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid. Another way to reduce excessive swelling and redness is to apply cold compresses. The main thing is not to overdo it, since too often strong cooling can be harmful.

Massage is possible! But not at once

If you remember, it is not recommended to do it before injections. But after that, it’s just what’s needed. Massage is one of the important recommendations for lip care after lip augmentation with filler. You can start it on the fourth day after the injections (if by this time severe swelling does not subside, contact your cosmetologist; massage is not recommended in this case).

The nuance is that it should be a light special massage. It is better to leave it in the hands of a specialist. The impact of the fingertips on the injection areas and the skin near the mouth should be very gentle and weak, press and press hard - do not ensure that the composition is distributed evenly under the skin. Using circular movements, you need to gently massage your lips, thereby helping the process of resorption of bruises and remaining swelling. Caring for lips after augmentation with hyaluronic acid also implies good saturation with moisture after a massage: apply a thin layer of moisturizing gel or cream to your lips, the cosmetologist will definitely advise you which product is most suitable for this. By the way, you can use olive oil or peach seed oil, which can be purchased at pharmacies.

Does it hurt to inject the drug into the lips?

Comparing the tools for contouring - a cannula and a needle, we can say that with the first, pain is minimized due to the smaller number of punctures and the blunt edge of the tip.

We prefer a cannula whenever it is appropriate. But if a cosmetologist has to “twist” the lips or significantly modify their shape, this tool is not suitable for the job. It only allows you to recreate the volume and outline the contour of the red border.

Many modern fillers contain lidocaine, which allows the introduction and distribution of the gel to be as comfortable and painless as possible. But patients are sometimes frightened by the very fact of the injection, because the lip area is very tender and delicate.

In this case, topical anesthesia is proposed:

  • Anesthetic cream is applied to the skin
  • The surgical field is covered with film
  • The exposure is maintained for 15-30 minutes

For patients with a low pain threshold, we provide dental conduction anesthesia, which will completely dull the sensitivity of the lip area at all stages of the procedure.

The dominant opinion in the choice of drugs and techniques for lip contouring should be given to the doctor, although the wishes of the patient are necessarily taken into account. And the best way to get an ideal result without complications for the patient is to choose competent, reputable and responsible cosmetologists.

Preparation for the procedure

Before volumetric correction of the lips and perioral area, a consultation with our doctor is carried out. The specialist will examine the lip area, evaluate the indications for lip augmentation and correction of their shape, discuss the desired and possible results, and establish contraindications.

Depending on the purpose of the procedure, the required drug of a certain degree of viscosity and its required volume are selected.

2 weeks before the procedure, you must refrain from visiting the solarium, staying in the open sun, and 2-3 days before the procedure, do not drink alcoholic beverages.

In addition, before such injections, peeling, hair removal and other cosmetic manipulations in the perioral area should not be performed.

2nd place. Massage and gymnastics

Massage and gymnastics are not such quick ways to enlarge lips as going to a cosmetologist or plastic surgery. But it definitely won’t harm the body!

True, when doing face fitness, don’t expect quick changes. This is comparable to working out in the gym. When you go there, you immediately understand that the result will appear in 2-3 months. Gymnastics will take about the same amount of time. Your lips are unlikely to noticeably gain in volume, but they will definitely look much better! The tissues will become more elastic and blood circulation will increase. Why not prevent sagging skin?

At first, it is better to work out with a face fitness trainer. By focusing on videos on the Internet, you can provoke new facial wrinkles. We don’t need nasolabial folds, do we?

You can enlarge your lips with massage at home or in the salon. Just mix sugar and honey and give yourself a light exfoliation. Spending just a few minutes pinching and stroking your skin will make a lasting difference in the volume of your lips. But it will definitely be useful!
