The long road to a masterpiece or who was the first to cut a diamond

The first cutters did not worry about processing. They took a diamond or other precious stone, ground it down, made several edges, polished it, polished it, and that’s it. This continued until the mid-50s of the 15th century. At this time, one jeweler of the Duke of Burgundy made a proposal to process the stone in the shape of a rose (the ancient Indians had long used this technology). For a long period of time, this method was considered the most basic and only.

In 1961, that is, literally quite recently, A. Neji proposed a processing that contained 65 facets (we will describe what this is a little later). This cutting method was modestly called “Princess”.

Definitions of Diamond Parts

Straight to the point.

1. The upper part of the diamond is usually called the crown, and the lower part is called the pavilion. The names themselves were born during the cutting of diamonds.
2. And the largest facet of the diamond crown (always facing the viewer) is called the platform.
3. From a geometry point of view, three more “definitions” are missing. The line that separates the pavilion and the crown of the faceted stone is the girdle. Agree, an interesting, beautiful, and bewitching definition.
4. The following two definitions are classified in the same “group” because they have practically the same goal, which is practically the same. Today, this form of processing is considered obsolete, but crystals are still cut in this way, since “rose” has two significant advantages: it is easy to perform and allows you to minimize costs.

During processing, the mineral loses from 35 to 70% of its original mass. If the stone is rare and expensive, then a complex cut can significantly reduce its weight - for this reason, a jeweler may use a rose-shaped cut.

Despite the fact that diamonds began to be processed a long time ago, jewelers did not immediately achieve significant success in this matter.

In 1919, mathematician Marcel Tolkowsky was able to calculate the ideal proportions of diamonds. It is worth noting that back in the 17th century there was a cut similar to diamond or classic, but this method of processing crystals was far from ideal.

Thanks to the calculations of Marcel Tolkowsky, it was possible to create a cut in which light entered the stone through the crown, it was refracted from the faces that were located below. As a result, the light began to play with rays, a “rainbow” was created. This was the so-called ideal cut of 57 falsettos, which is still used today.

Today, there are several forms of diamond processing; the cutting method largely depends on the size of the stone and the presence of defects in its structure.

After this, markings are applied to the rough diamond so as to cut off as little as possible, and the diamond will be as large as possible. But before falling into the hands of a cutter, diamonds undergo another level of processing - roughing.

How diamonds are cut:

1. First, a specialist visually evaluates the raw diamond, looking for the optimal method of processing and dividing it into parts. Then he applies heated glue to the holder over the saw blade, coated with diamond chips and special oil. On average, it would take up to 4 hours to cut one average rough diamond.
2. The second stage of the process is grinding, or shaping the rough diamond. The initial shape is set by a computer using 3D modeling, after which the cutter places the diamond on the cutting kitch (bearing arm) and securely fastens it. Then he presses a cast-iron disk against the stone, which, as it rotates, grinds off all the roughness left by the diamond cutter. They barely touch, but at the same time all the vices turn into dust. The grinding process takes another 3-4 hours.
3. Cutting directly begins from the platform - the upper flat face of the stone. Following the platform, the rims are cut at such an angle that they optimally meet at the bottom of the product. The specialist carefully ensures that the edges are mirrored in relation to each other, maximally reflecting and scattering the light entering the stone. After all, this is how the quality of a diamond cut is determined. He is helped in this by a device that measures the angles of the diamond’s facets and gives them an inclination of 42°.
4. The specialist then applies the edges that are located immediately below the flat area, the so-called crown. And then he carves a belt - a ring of edges that separates the crown from the rims.
5. Acid adds the finishing touch to turning diamonds into brilliants - it removes residual dust from cut stones.
